Lower Kenai Peninsula residents got a look at the newly remodelded and expanded Homer Medical Clinic last Friday, March 29.
A highlight was the unveiling of a wall-sized painting by Homer artist Marjorie Scholl, “Sharing Spaces Orange Roe,” hung in the patient waiting room. The South Peninsula Hospital Foundation commissioned and donated the painting.
Also on hand was new South Peninsula Hospital CEO Joseph Woodin, who started work last month.
SPH Board of Directors members gave tours of the public patient rooms as well as back-room conference, break and staff office space. Harpist Michelle Morton provided music.
“We’re celebrating tonight,” said SPH spokesperson Derotha Ferraro. “We have a lot to celebrate: expanded care, a new director and spring.”
The clinic expansion was completed by Steiner Construction, under contract with the Kenai Peninsula Borough.
The project added 5,584 square feet, including seven new exam rooms, a procedure room, phlebotomy draw room, lab and imaging.
The remodel created additional waiting areas in the clinic, a conference room, additional staff break area and additional office space, which allowed the billing office to vacate a leased building and relocate into the newly expanded main facility.
The expansion, publicly funded through South Kenai Peninsula Hospital Service Area general obligation bonds, was necessary to allow for additional practitioners to help address the growing demand for primary care on the southern peninsula.
Since the expansion has been completed, three additional providers have started practicing, and one more is expected in July, bringing the total number of providers to 17.
Dr. Paul Eneboe started Homer Medical Clinic in 1967, and is the southern peninsula’s busiest primary care clinic, offering a full scope of family practice treating people through their entire life span, including but not limited to obstetrics, midwifery, pediatrics, well women, general practice, gynecology, gerontology, disease management and more.
Homer Medical partnered with South Peninsula Hospital in 2012, and the clinic building was purchased by the Borough in 2015.
Homer Medical became a certified Patient Centered Medical Home in 2016 and is currently open six days a week until five, and evenings on Tuesday and Thursdays.
