Homer High student is runner-up in Alaska Poetry Out Loud

Homer High School student John Sarmiento of Homer is the second runner-up in the Alaska State Poetry Out Loud competition. Sarmiento competed on Tuesday in the state finals in the 360 North Studio at the KTOO Building, Juneau. Winner Maeva Ordaz, West Anchorage High School, Anchorage, goes on to compete in the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest. Rafael Sales, Thunder Mountain High School, Juneau, is the first runner-up.

The annual competition, presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition. Other competitors are Vy Tuong Be, Unalaska City School, Unalaska; Katherine Carstensen-Zerbst, North Pole High School, North Pole; Owen Fulton, Sitka High School, Sitka; Tyler Kelly, Twindly Bridge Charter School, Wasilla; Angela Nashalook, Unalakleet School, Unalakleet; Hazel Underwood; Kenny Lake School, Copper Center, and Zoë Wassman, Skagway School, Skagway.
