City, borough elections to be held Oct. 4

Two candidates are running for Homer Mayor and three candidates are running for two, 3-year Homer City Council seats. The city also will hold an election on Proposition No. 1, to approve general obligation bonds for a new police station and a 0.65-percent seasonal sales tax increase to fund the bonds.

For profiles on the city candidates, see pages 5-7. In the Sept. 22 issue candidates will answer questions posed by the Homer News, and in the Sept. 29 issue we will publish commentaries by them.

Homer Proposition 1: General obligation bonds for a new police station and related capital improvements; 0.65% sales tax rate increase to 5.15%

The borough ballot includes four propositions and several service area board seats.

KPB Proposition 1: Central Peninsula Landfill general obligation bonds of $10.6 million

KPB Proposition 2: South Kenai Peninsula Hospital Service Area general obligation bonds of $4.8 million

KPB Proposition 3: Increasing the sales tax cap from $500 to $1,000 and eliminating sale taxes on residential rents

KPB Proposition 4: Phasing out the optional senior citizen exemption for new applicants by the year 2024

South Peninsula Hospital Service Area Board (three, 3-year seats); Homer and the lower peninsula vote: Seat G: Clyde T. Boyer Jr.; Seat H: Doris Cabana; and Seat I: Ralph Broshes
