Fight leads to capture of fugitive

Never bring a knife to a gun fight, the saying goes — or a rock to a knife fight, a Washington man found out on Monday, particularly if you’ve got a warrant out for your arrest.

Jesse R. Blumer, 32, got a trip to South Peninsula Hospital for a knife cut to his face, but he’ll also be getting a trip back to Washington.

In investigating an assault on Monday involving Blumer, Homer Police discovered he had a warrant for his arrest on a charge that he escaped from community custody in Vancouver, Wash. — that he did not fulfill conditions of parole. Police arrested Blumer after he was treated and released from the hospital, and he was taken to Wildwood Correctional Center in Kenai for eventual extradition to Washington.

Blumer was cut in the face, but did not suffer life threatening injuries, said Homer Police Lt. Will Hutt.

Blumer got in a fight about 11:30 a.m. Monday with a 28-year-old California man at the city campground on the Homer Spit near the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon. Hutt said Blumer and the California man had been arguing and Blumer threw a rock at the man. The man pulled a knife and slashed Blumer in the face. The California man went to the campground office, the Glacier Drive-in and then the Sports Shed to get help, when he then called 911 on his cell phone. Hutt said it’s not clear why the California man didn’t call 911 first. Blumer had been drinking, Hutt said.

Police have forwarded their investigation to the Kenai District Attorney to see if charges of assault should be filed against either or both men or if the California man can claim self defense. The California man had a bump on his head and abrasions, but refused medical treatment.
