Warren Miller event ushers in ski season

Kick off those summertime sandals and strap on some skis. What better way to wrap your head around the changing seasons than with Warren Miller’s “No Turning Back”?

The 65th of Miller’s films, this year’s is an homage to six and a half decades of mountain culture and adventure filmmaking as only Miller can do it.

“We’re taking a legacy that dates back to before skis had edges and mountains had condos and we’re running with it to the steepest peaks around the globe and back to the Mom and Pop hills that define skiing and riding,” say the makers of the film in a press release announcing its schedule around the United States and Canada.

The film includes footage of more than 20 top skiers such as Olympic and World Championship gold medalist finalist Bode Miller and Julia Mancuso, another Olympic gold medalist.

The Homer showing is part of a four-stop Alaska tour that also includes Anchorage, Fairbanks and Girdwood.

In Homer, “No Turning Back” shows at the Homer Theater at 7 p.m. Nov. 6, presented by the Kachemak Ski Club.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with some door prizes and footage of local skiing shown beforehand, said Bill Wiebe, KSC spokesperson.

Proceeds from “No Turning Back” will help KSC’s rope tow efforts, as has a grant from the state of Alaska.

“Lots of work went into the application and we appreciate the help provided by Rep. (Paul) Seaton,” said Wiebe of securing the state grant.

The club has purchased a new safety snowmachine and rescue sled. Using a bulldozer provided by Don Bellamy, vegetation on the ski hill has been smoothed out. Funding provided by the Homer Foundation also provided for installation of a new wireless stop switch and construction of a new website.
