Paving over the past

Professional duty and a freshened respect for memory’s traps oblige me to point out an error in my Homer News memoir last week — in the first sentence. Paving crews were indeed bringing change to Homer when I arrived in September of 1975, but they were working on East End Road, not Pioneer Avenue. Indeed, a newspaper article later that fall — written by the town’s new editor, me — detailed how rainy weather halted the road work season early, leaving Pioneer Avenue pulverized and prepped with crushed rock for actual paving the following June.
