Students learn principles of design

Recently three classes at Paul Banks participated in a week-long Artist in the Schools Program through the Bunnell Street Arts Center.  The residency gave our students an opportunity to have local artist Marie Alexson assist them in creating personal flags.  Through movement, art and writing each student created a series of five flags using pastel on fabric.

It was very exciting to see the students respond to the principles of design: balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm and unity in their art and writing. Thank you, Marie, for your patience, flexibility and willingness to work with our students.

We would like to thank Bunnell Street Arts Center for their continued support for the arts in our local schools.  We also would like to extend our appreciation to those who help fund the Artist in Schools projects, which include the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Jazzline, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, and the Rasmuson Foundation.

Thank you,

Kari Greiner, Jenny Olson and Laurie Martin
