Nereus claims first in Converse Cup

In the Homer Yacht Club’s Converse Cup, held Aug. 2 on Kachemak Bay, Nereus sailed into first place. The race began at the Deepwater Dock, under clear skies and with a light day breeze of five to seven knots. Five boats competed, with Nereus first across the starting line, followed by Winter Hawk.

Morning Star pushed to the lead, while Freedom 2 struggled with a near-shore current. Continuing to the green buoy, spinnakers were used by several entrants as they continued on to Gull Island, where Nereus reclaimed the lead. Winds built to 10 knots for the final leg of the race.

Final results:

1. Nereus; 2. Morning Star; 3. Martha J; 4. Winter Hawk; and 5. Freedom 2.
