Special Olympics to serve up fundraising meal
Wondering what to have for lunch May 8? Wonder no more. The Homer athletes of Special Olympics Alaska have cooked up a solution: a boxed lunch prepared “bento” style, bento being a packed lunch of Japanese origin.
The Homer version features a choice of salmon, a chicken thigh or tofu, served with rice and topped with teriyaki sauce, and accompanied by steamed broccoli and fruit. Tessa Drais will be doing the cooking with help from volunteers.
Cost of the meal is $15 each. Orders must be placed by May 5 by calling 299-1606. Deliveries will be made to in-town locations. Orders also can be picked up at Parkside Plaza, 3665 Ben Walters Lane. Individuals and groups who have placed orders will receive a courtesy reminder call May 7.
“Our goal is to do 100 lunches, which we think will raise about $800,” said Carol Shuler, Homer Community Director for Special Olympics Alaska. Those proceeds will be used to purchase new uniforms for the 35 local athletes ranging in age from 8 to 60.
Upcoming Special Olympic events include:
May 9: Basketball and swimming competition, Homer vs. central peninsula, Soldotna High School;
May 16: 5K Torch Run, beginning at the base of the Homer Spit;
June: Bocce and golf season begins, partners are needed, for more information, call 299-1606.
