Seahawk cagers sweep Mariners during Senior Appreciation Night

The Homer Mariners hosted the Seward Seahawks last Friday at the Alice Witte gymnasium for the last home game of the basketball season. Both varsity squads lost during the Mariners’ senior appreciation night.

Seahawks 46, Lady Mariners 22

The Lady Mariners started off the night losing to the Seahawks 46-22. Seniors Alicia Isenhour, Miranda Beach, Tiyana Hill and Hailey Oliver received much playing time during their last home game as Mariners, while Oliver was the only senior to score with 6 points, all coming in the paint.

Sophomore Tayla Cabana led Homer with 12 points in the Mariners’ loss.

Mariner turnovers were the story of the night, accounting for quick Seahawks’ buckets and a slow 12-4 start in favor of the Hawks despite them missing five free throws at the line.

The Mariners were held to less than 10 points per quarter. Coach Brent Keene imposed a press in the second half to slow down Seward’s offense, which worked, but the Mariner offense couldn’t put up enough buckets. Eventually, the Mariners fell to the Seahawks by 24 points.

Seward’s Ashley Barstal led the victors with 14 points, followed by Jasmine Perrea’s 10.

This weekend the Lady Mariners take on the Houston Hawks in the first round of the regional tournament held this Friday at Seward High School.

Seahawks 54, Mariner Men 25

The Mariner Men ran into similar troubles with Seahawks, falling 54-25 in a matchup that had the Mariners coughing up the ball countless times due to Seward’s full court pressure.

Homer seniors Mark McGregor, Sam Reinert and Willy Deaver combined for 11 points on the night, while the team as a whole shot 5-6 from the foul line, even though they trailed the entire game due to their initial 2-3 zone that was exploited by ball movement and open jumpers.

Seward’s Mathew Moore scored 9 points in the opening quarter, finishing with a game high 18 for the night.

Homer began trapping in the corners during the second quarter to hold off the deep shot attempts, accounting for the closest quarter of the game, but the Mariners found themselves trailing 31-15 at the half.

The halftime break seemed to refuel the Seward shooters as Moore single handily matched Homer’s 8 points in the third. Finding themselves up by 20 in the fourth quarter, Seward laid off its press, while Sheldon Hutt scored the only basket in the quarter for Homer, finishing the game as the only Mariner in double digits with 12 points.

Seward made a total of seven three pointers, which made the game’s difference early on as Homer lost by 29 points on senior night.

The boys play their first game of the regional tournament Friday against Anchorage Christian School, a team the Mariners have yet to beat since changing conferences. Look for the Mariners to upset their opponents as they will also be playing on Saturday regardless of Friday’s outcome.
