Soccer teams show improvement

It’s been a busy few weeks for the Soccer Association of Homer competitive teams.

The Homer Hawks (U12 coed team) are showing steady improvement, and along the way are playing some strong soccer. June 18 found them in a rematch against the U12 Kenai girls at Kenai, where they lost in a close match 4-2, with goals scored by Ethan Anderson and Phin Weston. Just a few days later, at the June 22-23 Solstice Cup in Anchorage, the Under 10 component of the Hawks placed fourth in their first ever tournament.  Their next tournament is the Zane Cup, Aug. 2-4 in Anchorage.

Also playing Kenai on June 18 were Homer’s U16 girls. Short one player, they borrowed a Kenai player to complete their side. The girls won 2-1, with the first goal being scored by the borrowed player, Cassidy Holmes, and the second by Homer’s Lindsey Schneider.

Both goalies, Ali McCarron and Desiree Cleary, had great saves. Uliana Reutov was exceptional in getting the ball up the field and away from the Homer zone. Megan Pitzman used outstanding defensive thinking, putting her exactly where she needed to be at the right times. Rounding off the teamwork were Kat Temple and Hannah Mershon who consistently and boldly passed the ball up the line and out of the defensive zone.

The next Kenai games are slated for July 23 at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
