Wrestlers travel to Wasilla

A small, but powerful group of Popeye wrestlers traveled to Wasilla to compete in a Greco Roman Tournament on Friday and a Folkstyle Tournament on Saturday. Sixteen wrestlers brought home a total of 16 medals.

Leading the way was Wayne Newman, schoolboy 99 pounds. Newman won by tech fall against all his opponents on Friday and then placed third in the folkstyle on Saturday.

Schoolboys Luciano Fasulo, 103, and Teddy Croft, 134, each took home two second-place medals. Croft lost to his old-time nemesis Evan Bockman of the Battlecats. Both matches were extremely close with Bockman winning by one and two points.

Other second-place finishes went to intermediate 55-pound Lucas Barnard, Greco; novice 86 Austin Shafford, folkstyle; cadet Tristen Cook, Greco; junior 137 William Roth, Greco; cadet 130 Jaime Rios, folkstyle, and junior 140 Austin McGregor, folkstyle.

Shafford lost his first match of the season to Tucker Vann of Nikiski. Shafford won last weekend 12-4 in freestyle.

Tristen Cook beat Jeff Glynn from Mat-Su, 8-7, the exact score that he lost to Glynn last weekend in Nikiski.

Levi King, schoolboy 148, placed third both days. Also placing third was cadet 141 Kyle Wells in Greco and Ravi Cavasos, cadet 134, in Folkstyle.

This weekend the team travels to Anchorage for another Folkstyle tournament at Service High School.
