Girls score win against Nikiski; face Seward

It has been a roller coaster sea- son for the Mariners girls soccer team. Though the team faced formi- dable challenges this past week go- ing up against both Kenai and Grace Christian School, the team pulled it together on Saturday for a 5-0 win against Nikiski.

Saturday’s win is a clear demon- stration of the talent brewing within the team. Rachell Ellert, a junior, and Desiree Cleary, a sophomore, remain stand out contributors to the team standings. Together they’ve scored the most goals on the team, but not with- out assists from sophomore Uliana Reutov and Aspen Daigle, senior.

The victory was a much needed success. Even after a 0-3 loss to Kenai

Central last Tuesday, the team was continues to push on and improve.

Proof of the team’s steadfastness and refusal to quit was evident in their tense match against Ketchikan last Thursday. Though the Mariners gave Ketchikan a run for their money, they were unable to break Ketchikan’s de- fense, closing out the game with a 1-1 tie.

The team’s only goal that game was scored by Ellert.

They were unable to build on that momentum, and lost 2-0 to Grace Christian School the next day.

On Wednesday the team was schedule to face off against Soldotna High. They will be given one last chance on to determine their standings in Regions when they play Saturday against Seward.
