Wrestlers travel to Anchorage

Popeyes score 14 wins 

Popeye Wrestling Club wrestled at the Anchorage freestyle wrestling club tournament. Friday was Greco-style and the wrestlers competed freestyle on Saturday.

 Popeye took 12 wrestlers to the Friday Greco tournament and brought home three first-place, two second-place and three third-place wins. Dallas Walker received his first gold medal in Greco; Damian Kerr also placed first. Nestor Kalugin, Anthony Kalugin, Ian Stovall, and Cole Bernier all battled against tough competition. 

Out of the 12 wrestlers competing in Saturday’s tournament, Popeye brought home three first-place, two second-place and one third-place wins. Dimitri Hooks in his second tournament got his first gold medal. Assistant Brad Phelps avenged his loss in Homer and took first against one of the Arctic warriors coaches, Brad Drake, in an exciting match that went the distance. Mose Hayes continues to dominate with another first place. 

Popeye will travel to Palmer for the Matmen Tournament on Fridaynand Saturday6. Also Matmen is hosting this year’s War of the Roses all-girls national tournament Friday. Popeye also will be out around Homer selling annual club raffle tickets. Top three prizes are cash — $1000, $500 and $250 — and lots of other prizes to be drawn. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20.

Second place: Declan Barnard, Mose Hayes

Third place: John Barnard , Christopher Cudaback, Christopher Clucas 

Saturday First place: Dimitri Hooks, Brad Phelps, Mose Hayes 

Second place: Nestor Kalugin, Damian Kerr

Third place: Dallas Walker 

 

Anchor King wrestlers represented in two meets

Although the weather in Anchor Point was sunny, many families ventured out into the storms around Seward and Anchorage for a weekend of wrestling. The Newman brothers headed north and attended the Anchorage Freestyles Wrestling tournament. 

On Friday night Wayne Newman, took first place and Blake Newman earned second place in Greco matches. Saturday’s Anchorage tournament had four Anchor King Wrestlers. The Newman brothers both took home second place medals and Wayne also earned a second place in the junior age division. Also participating in Anchorage were  siblings Alana and Aiden Crane, both first year wrestlers.

The majority of the Anchor King wrestlers braved the snow on Saturday and headed to Seward. Twelve wrestlers participated in the Marathon Wrestling Tournament. PreBantam wrester Aastah Hoyer earned third place with a 10-0 tech fall in her final match.

Three Bantam wrestlers participated, each earning a medal. Alysha Nyvall took home second place. Soren Hoyer and Parker Overson both earned third place medals. 

Intermediate wrestlers Carter Woodhead and CJ Burns both earned first-place medals in their weight divisions. CJ had the fastest pin of 25 seconds for the team this weekend. Jeremy Russell also competed in the Intermediate age division. Russell Nyvall was the sole Novice wrester for the Kings, earning a third-place finish. 

Cadet wrestlers Luciano Fasulo, Silver Flowers, and Allison Wells all had to wrestle each other. Luciano took first, Silver took second, and Allison took third. Kyle Wells took second place in the Junior age group. 

Wrestlers of the week were Aastah Hoyer, Alana Crane, Rachel Munoz, and Allison Wells. The move of the week for the younger age group was the half nelson and the older kids learned the under arm spin.
