Longtime Anchor Point resident John Paul Sweeney Jr., 66, died Sept. 23, 2015, in Gaston, Ore., with his wife Lyn at his side. Memorial services will be held in November in Oregon at a time and place to be announced.

John was born May 29, 1949, in Reno, Nev., to John Paul Sr. and Elvina Sweeney. He grew up in Reno, graduating from high school and attending two years of community college there. He moved to Anchor Point in 1977. He married his wife, Lyn, in 1982.

In Alaska he worked on the North Slope for Veco, worked for the Homer News as a delivery driver, worked as a boat tender and in other maritime jobs, worked for Anchorage Daily News, drove for Chux Taxi, and was a security guard at South Peninsula Hospital.

“He was my soul mate, my protector, my companion, the love of my life. I cherished every moment I spent with him,” said his wife, Lyn.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Paul Sr. and Elvina Sweeney; and his son, Richard.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lyn Sweeney; his daughter, Mikki Panchot; his son, Scott Panchot; grandson, Tevin Hopper, who he and Lyn had the privilege of raising; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John loved animals. As a memorial, his family asked that donations be made to a local animal rescue shelter or society.
