Registration for upcoming classes is now going on. Marine Trades training workshops include How Steel and Aluminum Boats are Built, 6:30 p.m. March 4; How Wood and Composite boats are Built, 6:30 p.m. March 18, and Marine Mechanical Systems, 6:30 p.m. March 25. All classes are $25. Other upcoming spring classes include gourmet cooking/culinary arts, seaweeds of Kachemak Bay, watercolor painting, garden design, boating safety and fly fishing. Admission to the museum is free for February. Gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Free admission continues Tuesdays and Wednesdays in March. South Peninsula Hospital
South Peninsula Hospital offers a safe sitter class on Thursday and Friday, March 12 and 13, during the school district’s spring break. The class is designed for 11-13 year olds to teach basic child care, infant and child CPR, first aid, safety for the sitter, behavior management and business etiquette.
The class will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. Students should bring their own lunch. Registration is required. The cost is $70 per person, and scholarships are available. Please call the hospital’s education department at 235-0258 for more information and to register.
South Peninsula Hospital will do an emergency disaster preparedness drill on March 19, 20 and 21 in Homer. The scenario will be a disaster which causes increased patient surge and a damaged facility. The three-day event will exercise the hospital’s emergency management plan, evacuation plan and employee/community readiness. The exercise will include a mass casualty, mass fatality, partial evacuation, and the creation of an alternate care site.
Volunteers will be used as mock patients, patient’s families, affected neighbors, inquiring media and inquiring public. Volunteer shifts range from four to 12 hours and include orientation and refreshments. To volunteer, please contact Derotha Ferraro at South Peninsula Hospital at 235-0397.
