Homer girls head to Regions as top seed with 21-1 record

The Homer girls varsity basketball team picked up three conference wins in their March 3-5 games against Anchorage Christian Schools, Houston and Grace Christian. The team will begin playing the 3A region conference tournament with a 10-0 conference record and 21-1 overall record. 

The Mariner boys varsity basketball struggled against their opponents and lost each of their three games against ACS, Houston and Grace. They will begin the region conference with a 1-9 conference record and a 4-18 overall season record.

The region conference games will be held March 10-12 at Grace Christian. The Homer boys will play their first game in the tournament against Nikiski today at 7:15 p.m. As the top seed in the conference, the Mariner girls’ first tournament game will be on March 11 at 2 p.m. The girls will play the winner of the March 10 Nikiski vs. Houston game.

Homer girls 44, ACS 38

Homer girls varsity basketball came back in the fourth quarter to top ACS 44-38 and claim a 17th straight victory last Saturday.

The Mariners were down 36-35 entering the final frame, but Aurora Waclawski led the fourth-quarter charge with seven of her 16 points. Kayla Stafford had 10 for the Mariners. 

ACS boys 92, Homer 42

The boys varsity team did not fare as well as the girls against ACS in Saturday’s game. The Lions took a 30-6 lead after the first quarter and did not look back, ending the game with a 50 point lead over the Mariners.

Koby Etzwiler led the Mariners with 12 points, while Hunter Edens and Johann Kallelid each had 10.

Homer girls 50, Houston 43

The Mariners swiped their 16th straight game, beating host Houston in Peninsula Conference play on Friday, March 4.

Madison Akers finished with 16 points, five rebounds and five steals for the Hawks. Kayla Stafford added 10 for Homer, which enjoyed a 17-7 second-quarter run.

Houston boys 64, Homer 43

Homer’s boys lost to Houston, 21 points behind their opponents, on Friday evening.

Jordan Beachy, Hunter Edens and Johann Kallelid finished with 10 points each for Homer.

Homer girls 35, Grace 34

The Homer girls varsity team took their first win of the weekend against Grace on March 3, winning by just one point. 

Grace boys 73, Homer 29

Mariner boys fell to Grace, who finished Thursday’s game with an overwhelming 44-point lead.
