Karen Zak to leave chamber
Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center Executive Director Karen Zak has resigned her position as head of Homer’s main economic development and visitor services nonprofit organization.
In a letter sent to chamber members last Thursday, the chamber board of directors announced it has accepted Zak’s resignation. Her last day is July 7.
“I will be returning to my roots in meeting and event management,” Zak said in her resignation letter. “Thank you for the opportunity to serve the chamber and the community. I look forward to my continued service to the chamber and the community by way of volunteering for events and also as a member.”
In its letter, the chamber board said Zak left “due to being offered another consulting position in Anchorage.” The wife of Homer Mayor Bryan Zak, Karen Zak said she and her husband will stay in Homer.
Before leading the chamber, Zak worked for 18 years running Visions Meeting and Event Planning, her private business. She will resurrect that company and also do consulting work planning meetings and events.
The Zaks also own Alaska Adventure Cabins, eight cabins on 10 acres near the top of Baycrest Hill. With Mayor Zak focusing more on city business, Karen Zak will take a larger role in running the cabins, she said.
“I’ve neverhad the opportunity to do thisbefore,” she said. “I look forward to maybe going fishing and maybe going across the bay and doing some summer activities.”
The chamber board praised Zak for her work.
“Karen’s work ethic and meaningful contributions on our Chamber and leadership of special events, including the extended hours of dedication are greatly honored. We will miss Karen’s charm, professionalism, empathy and strong work ethic. We respect Karen’s decision and wish her continued success in her new endeavors,” the board said in its press release.
“I have learned so much about the community and our local businesses. The chamber is an outstanding organization,” Zak said.
Zak said several applicants are being considered now, but that the position remains open until filled.
