Richard "Dick" Alvey Miller Richard "Dick" Alvey Miller, aged 83, died in Anchorage on May 11, 2011. He was born on July 4, 1927, on a farm in Union County, Miss. His parents were John Thomas Miller and Mattie Collins Miller. His older brothers, John, George and Lawrence, and sister Birma preceded him in death. He graduated from public school in Myrtle and Mississippi College, Clinton, Miss. He held master's degrees from Southwestern Baptist Seminary and from the University of Mississippi. An ordained Baptist minister, he first came to Ketchikan in 1949, and except for schooling, lived the rest of his life in Alaska.

Thomas Reese Jones, 83, died in his sleep on Dec. 18, 2010. Reese was born Dec. 15, 1927, to Thomas H. and Emma (Reese) Jones in Arlington, Wash. Although the couple had lived in Alaska for a number of years, they spent the first few years of Reese's life outside with family before returning to make their home in Seward in the early 1930s.

Floyd A. Hutton Floyd A. Hutton died Jan. 5, 2011, in Homer, at age 59. He was born March 8, 1951, and raised in upstate New York. He grew up hunting and fishing with his father and these skills became a focus in his life. After graduating from high school he served two years in the U.S. Navy in Texas. He hitchhiked to Alaska in 1975 to hunt and fish with a buddy who had moved here. He fell in love with Alaska and stayed on. He lived and worked on a dairy farm in the Wasilla area for two years, then moved to the Kenai Peninsula.

Michael D. Gill Homer resident Michael D. Gill, 94. died Nov. 10, 2010, of natural causes. He was surrounded by family who loved him dearly.
Joe Dean Penny Mr. Joe Dean Penny died peacefully in his sleep with his wife by his side after a lengthy illness on Nov. 10, 2010. He was 65 years old.
ames Buckner, 60, died at Appleton Health Care Center in Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010. He was born Jan. 3, 1950, in Omaha, Neb., to Earn and Alvena Buckner. He graduated from the Delevan School for the deaf in 1969. He worked for J.J. Keller until a disability caused him to retire. He enjoyed visiting his sister and family in Alaska and made his last trip in August.

Mamie (Yurkovsky) Velsko, 94, died Nov. 6, 2010. A service is 10:30 a.m. Nov. 11, 2010, at the Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church in Ninilchik. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, N.Y.

Nick Leman Lifelong Alaskan and Ninilchik resident Nick Leman died Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Heritage Place in Soldotna. He was 92.
Zoey Kaytlin Gullett, infant daughter of Ida and Christopher Gullett, died in Lafayette, La., on Oct. 9, 2010. Her grandparents are Scott and Lisa Gullett of Hayden, Colo., and Larry and Linda Martin of Homer.
Ernest Clair Hobbs Former Homer resident Ernest Clair Hobbs, 84, died in the presence of family and caring staff at Marlow Manor in Anchorage on Sept. 30, 2010. At his request, there will be no service.
James F. Babski
Longtime Alaskan and Homer resident James F. Babski died Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at Maria's Majestic View Assisted Living in Homer. He was 89. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Jerry Jacob Bernhardt
After a short bout with cancer and complications, Jerry went to be with the Lord on Oct. 3, 2010. He was born on Nov. 19, 1935, to Jake Bernhardt and Elizabeth Stahley Bernhardt in Laurel, Mont. Jerry grew up and graduated from high school in Laurel. He married Lenna Ferrin in 1955 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, while he was stationed there with the Marine Corps. He served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956.
