Tammy Hagerty

Tammy Hagerty’s life started on Jan. 1, 1953, and ended on March 23, 2015 in the rural Bend area of Oregon. She succumbed after a 5-year courageous struggle with cancer. Without regret, she tackled several health challenges from early adulthood on. Her family said she lived according to her life mottos: “Deal with obstacles! Recover! Move forward! Look forward! Enjoy life!”

Alice Mayo Shaw

Alice Mayo Shaw 

Jan. 10, 1950 – March 21, 2015

Part-time Homer resident Alice Mayo Shaw died March 21, 2015, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Although based in Sarasota, Fla., the Shaws built a summer home in Homer in 2007, where Alice drew and her husband, Bruce, photographed wildlife.

William “Bill” T. Abbott

Former Homer resident William (Bill) T. Abbott of Georgetown, Texas, died March 30, 2015, with his family by his side. He was 75.

He was born Jan. 1, 1940, at Fort Sill (Lawton), Okla., to  Mose and Mildred Abbott, and was a devoted husband to Ly T. Nguyen, wife of 43 years, and dedicated father to three children. Bill graduated from Lawton High School, earned his bachelor of science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and his master of business administration from the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Viola A. Hall, 85, died peacefully at home on Sunday, March 22, 2015, with loved ones by her bedside, after suffering for several years with multiple medical problems.

She was born on Sunday, Oct. 27, 1929, in Montavilla, Ore., to Mac and Ann (Farier) Lear. She was the middle kid with 13 brothers and sisters. Viola graduated from the Montavilla Vestal School and then went on to nurse’s training in Gresham, Ore., and obtained her Licensed Practical Nursing degree in Portland.

Anchor Point resident, Mr. Phillip Jainese, 72, died Saturday, March 7, 2015. at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer. No services are planned at this time. 

 Mr. Jainese was born Jan. 15, 1943. to Leslie J. and Barbara Mary (Carry) Jainese in Beaumont, Texas. 

He is survived by his sister, Emma Foux of Texas.  

 Arrangements were made by Homer Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

 

Donald “Don” A. Malcolm Jr.

Captain Donald (Don) Alexander Malcolm Jr., 60, died Feb. 28, 2015, “nestled in the bosom of his family, while smoking, drinking whisky and telling lies,” his family said. “He died due to complications resulting from being stubborn, refusing to go to the doctor and raising hell for six decades. Stomach cancer also played a minor role in his demise.”

Lyle D. Cole

Longtime Kasilof resident Mr. Lyle Douglas Cole, 84, died Monday, March 9, 2015 at Leah and Bob Handley’s home, where he was being lovingly cared for. 

A memorial mass is 1 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2015, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 222 W. Redoubt Ave., Soldotna. A reception will follow the services at the church. 

Bertha Marie Seversen

Anchorage resident Bertha Marie Seversen, 88, died at the Alaska Native Medical Center on Feb. 25, 2015.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday March 8, 2015, at Saint Innocent Russian Orthodox Church, Anchorage, with a following at the South Central Foundation Gathering Room, 4501 Diplomacy Drive, Anchorage.

Don Malcolm

Don Malcolm died unexpectedly of cancer on Feb. 28, 2015, in Edmonds, Wash. There will be a small family service in Washington. A full obituary will follow in a future issue of the Homer News.

A memorial service and fundraiser for Don is at noon Sunday, March 8, 2015, at the Down East Saloon, 3125 East End Road. The event starts with a potluck followed by an auction and 50-50 split the pot. Potluck food and donations can be dropped off at the Down East Saloon.

John Francis Payne

John Francis Payne died Feb. 25, 2015, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage. He was born June 19, 1958. If there is anyone who knows him or has information on how to contact his immediate family or any family member, please contact Legacy Funeral Home, Heritage Chapel at Angelus 907-336-3338.

James Michael “Mic” Hendryx

James Michael “Mic” Hendryx, 65, died Feb. 25, 2015, at his home in Deep Creek. “Mic was a very open-hearted, generous man, and a gift to make each person he met feel special,” his family said.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015, at The Kenai Peninsula Memorial Chapel & Crematory, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway. A reception will follow from 5-7 p.m. at Tyotka’s Elder Center in Old Town Kenai.

Jack “Yukon Jack” Metzler

Jack “Yukon Jack” Metzler, 79, died peacefully on Feb. 8, 2015, at home in Anchor Point after a battle with cancer. Jack was born on March 25, 1935, in Chad, Africa, to missionary parents. He loved growing up in Africa, where his love for the Lord and for adventure began. When Jack was 12 years old he sailed to America with his family on the Queen Mary.

Floyd Grant ‘Pat’ Peterson

Longtime Alaska resident Mr. Floyd Grant “Pat” Patterson, 68, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.

Funeral services were held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at Chapel by the Sea, 14730 Turnagain Bluff Way in Anchorage. Graveside services followed at 2 p.m. at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. A fellowship gathering with light refreshments was held at the chapel directly following the graveside service.

Eugene LeRoy Loop

Eugene LeRoy Loop, 82, died peacefully Sunday morning, Dec. 21, 2014, at his home in Anchor Point surrounded by his immediate family. 

Per Eugene’s request, he was cremated and will be buried with his family in Washington. A service will be held in Homer at St. John’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m. March 14, 2015. 

He was born Jan. 5, 1932, in Burlington, Wash. and raised on George Loop Road, Samish Island, Wash. 

Paula Miller

Paula Miller, 88, died Feb. 14, 2015. “Beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, went home to be with the Lord,” her family said. 

Michael John Hinsberger

Longtime Kasilof resident, Mr. Michael John Hinsberger, 57, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015, at Heritage Place in Soldotna due to injury complications from an accident nine years ago.  

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at Spruce Grove Memorial Park in Kasilof. A celebration of his life will follow the graveside service at 3 p.m. at the New Life Christian Fellowship Church, Mile 1 on the Kalifornsky Beach Road. Pallbearers will include Keith Morris, Levi Morris, Scott Hinsberger, Cameron Perry, Lowell Perry and Noah Perry. 

Claire Deitz

Longtime Homer resident, Claire Deitz, 80, died Feb. 11, 2015, in Anchorage.

A celebration of Claire’s life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at the Anchorage Moose Family Center, 4211 Arctic Blvd. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, at the Hickerson Memorial Park Cemetery in Homer. Officiating the service will be Pastor Lisa Talbott. Pallbearers will include Kenneth Deitz (son), David Deitz (son), Kenneth Deitz (grandson), Ernest Deitz (grandson), William Carlson (brother) and Stanly Griffin (son-in-law.)

Aaron Loren Morris

Aaron Loren Morris, 48, died unexpectedly at South Peninsula Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015.

Mr. Morris was born Feb. 9, 1966, in Tucumcari, N.M. He worked for Kay’s Concrete, Best Transit Mix, and Dibble Creek Rock most recently.

Roy G. ‘Skip’ Utter

Roy G. “Skip” Utter died peacefully Jan. 12, 2015, in Murrieta, Calif.

Skip was born April 12,1924, to parents Leonard and Alice Utter in Big Pine, Calif., and grew up there with brothers Bud and Dick on beautiful ranch land in the Owens Valley. The freedom of a boy’s life growing up in those times set forth a foundation of adventure that Skip was happily able to pursue for all of his life.
