Dorothy Brown

Dorothy Brown, 94, former Homer Homemaker of the Year, died peacefully June 20, 2015, in Fargo, N.D., from stroke complications. She is survived by numerous offspring, including 12 of her 15 children and several great-great grandchildren.

Ardis Bird Metcalf was born in Seattle on May 29, 1937, to Floyd and Elsie (Fraasch) Chapman. She died on June 8, 2015, at her home in Portland, Ore., at the age of 78. 

Tommie CarlinSchauer

Tommie CarlinSchauer, 57, died peacefully Dec. 18, 2014, in Green Bay, Wisc., after a brief battle with cancer. He had both of his children and several family members with him at the time of his passing. A tribute to Coach Tommie is 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2015, at Homer Middle School, with soccer teams playing short games to honor him. A celebration of Tommie’s life also is planned during the summer of 2015 in Minnesota. 

Delores “Dee” M. Hanrahan

Delores M. “Dee” Hanrahan, 73, died peacefully from cancer at the South Peninsula Hospital in Homer on May 26, 2015. She passed while surrounded by her son, Michael Indicavitch, her cocker spaniel, Buddy, and her husband, David Hanrahan. 

Delores relocated from Mesa, Ariz., to the Soldotna area of Alaska during the spring of 1984 after marrying David E. Hanrahan. They moved to Homer in 1996.

Homer resident Mrs. Grace V. Pinhak, 94, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at her home in Homer. No services will be held per her wishes.

Mrs. Pinhak was born Oct. 13, 1920, in Prospect Park, Pa. She graduated from high school in Pennsylvania. She moved to Homer in 2002.

Chris Lopez

Chris Lopez died peacefully at 8:50 a.m., Sunday, May 24, 2015, after a short, intense battle with cancer. His long-time partner, Kate Rich, and sons, Dylan and Simon, were in attendance.

A bonfire in celebration of Chris’s life will be held Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Bishop’s Beach, beginning at 8 p.m., with a short program and tributes to begin at 9 p.m. Friends and family may visit anytime this week at the home of Vickie Rich, 355 Whispering Meadows Ave., Homer, where a table displaying photos of Chris is available.

Walter Johnson

Walter Johnson, 92, respected Dena’ina elder from the Iliamna Lake region, died peacefully on May 23, 2015. Services will be held Saturday, May 30, 2015, with an open casket viewing at 2:30 p.m. and funeral at 3 p.m. at Glacierview Baptist Church, 960 East End Road.

Homer resident, Ms. Madeline Sider, 100, died Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at Long Term Care in South Peninsula Hospital in Homer.

A funeral mass was held Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Homer. Father Bob O.M.I. officiated. A reception followed downstairs at the church.

Iva Frances Nelson, 83, of Anchor Point died Sunday, May 3, 2015, at her home.

Fran was born Saturday, Sept. 12, 1931, in Goshen, Ill., to Kenneth and Iris (Delcamp) Green.

Longtime Kachemak Bay resident Rob- ert Purpura, 68, succumbed to the sea on April 27, 2015, while traveling alone in his skiff from Jakolof Bay to his home in Sel- dovia. When it was discovered he was over- due many of his friends rushed to search the area. His boat was found adrift with the

outboard idling off of MacDonald Spit and his body was found floating some distance away.

William E. “Bill” Carlson

Mr. William Edward “Bill” Carlson, 75, died April 18, 2015, peacefully in his sleep at his home five days after his 75th birthday. He was born April 13, 1940, to Eva Beal and Earnest Carlson of Anaconda, Mont. The family moved to Tanana in 1943 with the U.S. Army’s aircraft lend-lease program during World War II. Bill and his older sister Claire enjoyed a frontier childhood on the banks of the Yukon River among fish traps, dog sleds and stern-wheeled river boats.

Jacqueline Yetive Metzler

Jacqueline Metzler died March 25, 2015, in Elkhart, Ind., with her daughter, Jonnie Sue Banks, and the staff of the Elkhart Hospice House there with her. “She went to be with the Lord,” her family said. 

Jackie Metzler was born in Mishawaka, Ind., on Dec. 20, l937. She grew up running around her grandparent’s golfing range and as a result learned to golf at a very young age. She earned many golf trophies before completing high school. She was a graduate of Mishawka High School.

Tammy Hagerty

Tammy Hagerty’s life started on Jan. 1, 1953, and ended on March 23, 2015 in the rural Bend area of Oregon. She succumbed after a 5-year courageous struggle with cancer. Without regret, she tackled several health challenges from early adulthood on. Her family said she lived according to her life mottos: “Deal with obstacles! Recover! Move forward! Look forward! Enjoy life!”

Part-time Homer resident Alice Mayo Shaw died March 21, 2015, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Although based in Sarasota, Fla., the Shaws built a summer home in Homer in 2007, where Alice drew and her husband, Bruce, photographed wildlife.
