Longtime Alaska resident Mr. Harry John Buccilli, 71, passed away, Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Homer resident Mr. Mark Harland Matthews, 61, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, in Homer.
Mark was born Nov. 19, 1951, to Harland and Alice (Smith) Matthews in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in Washington where he graduated high school as well. Mark has lived in Alaska on and off throughout most of his adult life where he lived in Ketchikan, Anchorage, Anchor Point and most recently Homer. He was a carpenter by trade throughout Alaska and Washington. Mark loved seeing new places and meeting new people.
Kemper Lane Sackman, 63, passed away in his sleep in Homer on July 25, 2013.
A celebration of his life will be held from 3-7 p.m., Aug. 17, 2013, at the Down East Saloon.
Kemper was born in Riverton, Wyo., on May 1, 1950, to the late Kemper Eugene and Lois Sackman. His mother was a teacher and thus, Kemper chose to commit his entire life to giving everyone else “an education.”
Caroline Gill died peacefully of old age on Sunday, July 21, 2013, in Homer. She was 95. Born in Wheeling, W.V., to William Brownlee and Levancia Livingston Erskine on April 16, 1918, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Jane; her parents; and her husband, John Joseph Gill.
Lewis John Byerly, 55, died July 4, 2013, in Homer, doing what he loved: working on a commercial fishing vessel. A memorial is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at the Seafarers’ Memorial on the Homer Spit, with a potluck to follow.
Homer resident Martha Bernice Visger, 92, passed away June 28, 2013, at South Peninsula Hospital Long Term Care in Homer. A memorial service will be held Aug. 18, 2013, at the Moles Family Funeral Home in Bellingham, Wash.
Martha was born April 3, 1921, in Anchorage to a pioneer Alaskan family. Her father was Evan Jones, the father of Alaska coal mining. A mining engineer, Jones established mines throughout Southcentral Alaska, including Homer, where he founded the Homer Coal Corporation in the 1940s. He died in Homer in 1950.

Jack Warren Epperson, 91, of Homer, passed away July 9, 2013, after a short illness at his home in Homer. Per Jack’s wishes, no memorial services are planned.
Former Homer and Anchor Point resident Gilbert Franklin Marick Jr., 76, died July 6, 2013, at his home in Burlington, Kan., with his companion, Gretchen Hanson, at his side.
Gilbert was born on April 23, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Gilbert F. Marick Sr. and Gladys “Dixie” Erwin Marick.
Former Homer resident Natalie Cynthia “Cindy” Kenison, 53, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Brigham’s and Women’s Hospital in Boston with her loving daughter by her side. She was born in Fontana, Calif., on Aug. 11, 1959, and went to Exeter High School in Exeter, N.H. She raised three children and took in many others. She traveled to many places, but spent a significant amount of time in Homer and Palmer, Alaska, Colorado, California and New Hampshire. She lived in Homer from 1988-1992.

Homer resident Mr. Martin Clarence Altman, 44, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at The Ark of Homer in Homer.
Memorial services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2821 East End Road in Homer. There will be a potluck to follow at the church.
Homer resident Mr. John “Jack” Dallas Jump, 65, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at his home in Homer.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2013, at the Homer Elks Lodge, 215 W. Jenny Way in Homer. A family and friend memorial service will be held at a later date in Klamath Falls, Ore.
Former Homer resident Patrick Edward Zahler, 87, died April 25, 2013, in Sacramento, Calif.
Born Aug. 6, 1925, in San Diego, Calif., Pat was raised in Carlsbad, Calif. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Hancock air craft carrier for two-and-a-half years during World War II.
After separation from the Navy, he worked for AT&T as a lineman. He met Marian McKenzie in 1948 in Carlsbad. They were married in 1949 in Carlsbad, where they raised their family of two daughters and two sons.
Homer resident Warren L. Mamlock, 80, died Saturday, June 22, 2013, at home.
A celebration of his life will be 1 p.m. July 1, 2013, at American Legion Post 16, 2410 East End Road, Homer, with Pastor Greg from the Homer Assembly of God officiating.
Norman Richard Griffin (Dick) passed away peacefully in Homer on Sunday, June 9, 2013. He was born Oct. 29, 1917, to Herbert and Susan Griffin in Rochester, N.Y. He was educated in New York State and then worked in an Adirondack logging camp until his entry into the U.S. Army in 1938. Dick was an artillery instructor until his discharge in 1944. He was always most proud of his days in the U.S. Army. At nearly 40 years of age he received the highest mark ever achieved on the New York equivalency test in the state and was awarded scholarships to college.

Travis Coffey Sr., 34, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2013, in a motorcycle accident. Memorial services for Travis are 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the Church of Christ on East End Road.
Travis was born in Eureka, Calif., to Corinne and Michael Coffey. He moved to Homer in 1990 and has been a Homer resident for the last 23 years.
