Newspaper appreciated
During the past several years, The Homer News and various Alaskan businesses have donated several subscriptions of the newspaper to Voznesenka K-12 School. Voznesenka is a Russian Old Believer village located 25 miles from Homer. Due to the religion, students are somewhat isolated in terms of computer use, televisions and radio. The newspapers, however, help students become more aware of the larger society. In my classroom, students have used the newspaper as a discussion-starter regarding local politics, studied journalistic style of writing as well as creative writing and pleasure reading.
