There will be no First Friday reception at Art Shop Gallery this month. However, the gallery is maintaining regular hours, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
An open house and a creative activity are scheduled for First Friday at Gail Baker’s studio. Don’t forget Baker needs used mouse pads for an artist-in-the-schools program in January. They can be dropped off at the studio.
“Considering the Underskin,” an exhibit by Kathryn Kajdan Bell, an encaustics painter from Anchorage, will be featured at Bunnell during the month of January. An artist talk and slide presentation will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday, with an opening reception at 5:30 p.m.
An art swap and sale is the big event at the gallery Jan. 1-14. “Out with the old, in with the new,” is the theme according to gallery owner Irene Randolph. All art-related materials, including supplies, are being accepted through Jan. 14. They must be in good condition. The gallery has the right to reject any item. Prices must be on everything and are to include a 20 percent consignment commission. Swaps are free of commission and there will be a table “free for the taking.” Trading times are 2-6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 14. Silent offers will be accepted on all goods and the owner has the right to accept or reject offers. The gallery will contact art owners with offers made outside active trading hours. All sales are as-is and final. Everything must be removed by 6 p.m. Jan. 14 or will be considered a donation for charity. The gallery will be closed Jan. 14-Feb. 16.
There will not be a First Friday reception at HCOA this month. However, there are several events coming up. Jazzline Dancers will perform at the Mariner Theatre on Jan. 13 and 14 as a fundraiser for HCOA. (See related story, page 16.)
HCOA’s annual meeting and arts awards will be at the HCOA gallery at 6 p.m. Jan. 20. And submissions are being accepted for the February 2006 Emerging Artist Gallery show. For more information, call HCOA at 235-4288.
The public is invited to an open house at the studio on Friday from 5-7 p.m. It is located beneath Bunnell Street Gallery, next to Backdoor Studio.
There is no featured artist in the gallery during January, but a First Friday reception will give the public an opportunity to view items included in the year-end sale, which includes 20 percent off all prints. Cookies and hot chai will be served from 5-7 p.m.
“Winter Blues,” a multi-media expression of the moods, emotions and colors of winter landscapes, will be featured in the gallery during January.
It includes the work of 13 Ptarmigan Arts artists and 13 other artists from the area. An opening reception at 5-7 p.m. Friday will be catered by Two Sisters Bakery.
The museum is closed until February and will reopen Feb. 7 with “Making Ourselves at Homer,” a historical exhibit that local people have put together about creating the city of Homer.
It includes photos and objects, some from the community and some from the Pratt’s collections. Interviews, taped and transcribed, as well as scrapbooks also are part of the exhibit.
