Boys & Girls Club guitar lessons

Group guitar classes begin at the Boys and Girls Club on Thursday afternoons beginning this week and run through Feb. 10 with Anni Griffin instructing. Guitars are provided by the club. Participants must be at least 10 years of age, and space is still available. The cost is $60 for six classes, including clubhouse membership fee for the 2005 school year. "BrainBounce" Artists Trading Cards by Wanda Seamster

4:30 p.m. artist's slide talk, 5:30-7:30 p.m., opening exhibit, Bunnell Street Gallery

Wanda Seamster has collected and produced more than 400 artists trading cards for this exhibit in all mediums. The exhibit will include 20 cards made for trade as well as cards for artists to create their own art cards. Artists can create cards and then trade their art out with one of the tradable cards in the exhibit.

"Lighten Up," invitational exhibit

The mixed media invitational exhibit will include lamps, lights, night lights and other light-related items.

Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society Paint-Together

Noon-4 p.m., Homer Council on the Arts

The resource artist for the month will be Lela Ryterski who will give a demonstration and offer guidance in oriental painting. Participants are asked to bring their watercolors and whatever oriental brushes and absorbent papers (newsprint, classified ads, rice papers, etc) they may have. Supplies will also be available at the gathering. A working surface such as a card table or TV tray is recommended. All are welcome. Members get in free, and guests pay $10. Saturday Night Dances

All styles of dance from social dancing to swing, waltz, tango, rhumba, cha cha and line dancing welcome. All dances start with a mini class. Bring a clean pair of shoes not worn outside. Admission is $5.

Tsunami Relief Slide Show

Homer High School alumni Andy Markelz will present a slide show and question and answer period on his first year in the Peace Corps working as an English teacher in Kiribati in the South Pacific. The event is free and open to the public, especially students, and a collection jar will be provided for the Alaska Red Cross Tsunami fund.

Boys & Girls Club athletics programs

Jan. 10-Feb. 3, Homer Club House, Sterling Highway

The Boys & Girls Club athletics programs are starting up again in January. Both fifth- and sixty-grade lacrosse and fifth- and sixty-grade volleyball begin Monday and run through Feb. 3. Lacrosse meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:45 until 7:15 p.m. starting on Monday. Volleyball meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:45 until 7:15 p.m. starting on Tuesday. All athletic programs are $75 plus 2005 membership fees of $20. Call Loretta Erickson at 235-2772 for all inquiries or to enroll.

Christmas Tree Bonfire

5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, Mariner Park

Bring Christmas trees to the park at the base of the Homer Spit and join in a community bonfire. Trees can be dropped off earlier at Captain's Coffee, Pioneer Avenue.

Square and contra dance

7:30 p.m., McNeil Canyon Elementary School

Laura Patty will call dances to music by the Spit City Slickers. Bring clean, soft-soled shoes to dance in. Beginners are welcome and admission is $6 with youth under 16 free.

Parent to Parent classes

6-8 p.m. Jan 24, 27, 31 and Feb. 3, Connections at Paul Banks School

This video-based class provides parents, teachers, counselors, or anyone who cares about youth awareness, the information and skills necessary to help youth bridge adolescence without drugs and alcohol. No fee is charged, but pre-registration is required. Call Nancy Kleine, facilitator, at 235-3260.

Winter programs

11 a.m.-4 p.m., Jan. 16-March, Wynn Nature Center

The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies is sponsoring weekly winter programs each Sunday at its center on Skyline Drive. The Jan. 16 event is for kids and families to explore the trails and begin earning a Snow Ranger badge. On Jan. 23 the Wynn Nature Center cabin will be open and warm so anyone and everyone can come explore the trails by skis or snowshoes. A limited number of snowshoes are available to borrow. Call 235-6667 for more information.
