Gabriel Hanenberger, the infant son of Jason and Catherine Hanenberger, was medevaced to Providence Hospital in Anchorage on Dec. 11. He is in the pediatric intensive-care unit and will need heart surgery at a Portland, Ore., clinic. A fund has been set up at First National Bank to help his family, and donation jars are at local businesses. KBBI is now recruiting volunteers for the station. New equipment will be installed, and training sessions for new and old volunteers will be offered in February or March. To volunteer, stop by the station to pick up an application. Call 235-7721.

East Homer Church of Christ holds its fourth annual Coat Donation and Give-Away from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 18. Donations of old coats can be dropped off at the church office, 2879 East End Road, Monday-Saturday until Jan. 15.

The Homer Chamber of Commerce is soliciting events for the Homer Winter Carnival on Feb. 15-16. Call 235-8766 or 235-7740.

World Heritage seeks host families for high school foreign exchange students from Spain, France, Germany, Thailand, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico or Brazil visiting the United States for the 2003-04 academic year. Call Heather Haase in Valdez at (800) 888-9050 or visit www.world-heritage.org.

Girls ages 13-15 or 16-18 can still apply for the Alaska National Teen-Ager Scholarship Program, to be held March 14-15 at the Kenai Central High School auditorium. A winner in each age category will be selected to represent Alaska at the national program in August. More than $100,000 in cash and scholarships are awarded at the state level. Apply by Feb. 1. Student and Military News

Pehr Hartvigson, a senior at Soldotna High School, was the first-place winner in the Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary. He received a $500 savings bond. Amber Hall, a ninth-grade home school student, was the second-place winner, receiving a $400 savings bond and Jake Bell, a Homer High School senior, was the third-place winner, receiving a $300 savings bond. Twenty-five students participated in the program sponsored by the Virl "Pa" Haga Memorial Post 10221, Anchor Point. Students are judged on their expression of a patriotic theme. This year's theme was "Freedom's Obligation." Hartvigson's entry will be entered in a statewide contest this month, and the first-place winner receives $1,000 and a five-day, all-expenses paid trip to the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Ingrid Abrahamson of Anchor Point, and William Creamer, Sydney Schoepke and Clayton Smith made the fall dean's list at Montana State University, Bozeman, for earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

James B. Calhoun and Patrick O. Kinney made the fall honor roll at Oregon State University, Corvallis, for earning a straight-A or 4.0 grade-point average. Jasmine R. Fry made the OSU honor roll for earning a 3.5-3.99 GPA.

Community School

The winter catalogue has been mailed. New classes include "Wilderness First Aid," "Tarot Symbology for Personal Growth and Transformation," "Simple Cooking That Tastes Great," "Computer Class Drop In," "Kindergym," "Beginning Gymnastics" and "Chinese Essence Qijong." Registration is from 3-8 p.m. through today at the high school. Call 235-6090.

Classes begin the week of Jan. 13 for the spring semester. Registration for degree-seeking and general students has started. Students can register online, by automated telephone or in person. Course schedules have been mailed and are available at the college. New courses include Arc Welding, Pipe Welding, Six-Pack Marine License Preparation, Private Pilot Ground School, Dance Appreciation, AutoCAD, History of Alaska, Computerized Accounting, Education, Western Religions, Personal Finance, Small Business Management, Art and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Degree-seeking students should call the college to make an appointment with an adviser or to sign up to take assessment tests. Applications for local scholarships or tuition assistance are available. The college offers courses for two- and four-year degrees in psychology, accounting, human services, social work, business, welding, liberal studies, art, nursing, education and office technology. Ferry Schedule

The M/V Kennicott visits Kodiak, Seward, Valdez, Yakutat, Juneau, Ketchikan and Prince Rupert, Canada, before returning to Homer on Feb. 22. The Tustumena is in drydock for repairs and returns to Homer on April 15.
