This week, however, is a good time to think about another man's dreams, that of Martin Luther King Jr., whose birth and life is being celebrated on Monday. During his lifetime, King sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues. So rather than spending the day cleaning out the basement or watching home improvement shows, take a few minutes to consider how you might serve your community or help those around you. There's no shortage of great opportunities to help others with their dreams though there may be no help for the Betster's. And get out and enjoy the Cosmic Hamlet by taking in a few of these Best Bets:
The Mariner girls big women of basketball battle Dimond's twin towers at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. Dimond is the defending state champion, but Homer's got a couple secret weapons of its own, as demonstrated by last weekend's win at the Peninsula Challenge at Skyview. How often are four girls over 6 feet in the Homer High gym, so bring your blue and gold duds and your hollering voice and come out to cheer on the home team. If Friday's already booked, the girls play Soldotna at 5 p.m. Saturday and the boys take on SoHi at 6:45 p.m.
For weeks, our living rooms were dominated by Mother Nature's glorious offering, the Christmas tree, decorated with care and filling our houses with that wonderful fragrance of the holidays. But that's yesterday's news. This week, they will light up our lives once more when we burn 'em. A Christmas tree bonfire will be held at 5 p.m. Friday at the Mariner Park on the Homer Spit. Trees can be dropped off earlier at Captain's Coffee, and marshmallows and warm hats are recommended.
The nights are long and the temperatures are making even the Betster's furry friends a little tepid about the idea of setting foot outside, but on Saturday, there's reason to do so as heart-warming sounds and stomach-warming treats fill the Chapman School. It's the Anchor Point community talent show, with this year's theme "Fiddlin' Around in Anchor Point." Cathy Stingley and other local musicians will perform at the 7 p.m. show, and there will be a pie and cake silent auction. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors.
At the other end of town, a square and contra dance offers residents a chance to shake out those mid-winter doldrums with music by Spit City Slickers. As always, bring clean, soft-soled shoes to the 7:30 p.m. event Saturday held at McNeil Canyon School. Admission is $6 with youth under 16 free.
The red pens here at the Snooze wouldn't let the B' describe recent weather in appropriate detail, but one can always count on it to change and probably start #$%^&* raining. All the same, you can't stay cooped up inside forever and luckily, there's a lot to do outside this weekend. Winter programs start up this weekend at the Wynn Nature Center on Skyline Drive at 11 a.m. Sunday and kids can begin earning a Snow Ranger badge. At the Ohlson Mountain rope tow, a work party will start at noon Sunday to get the slope up and running for its opening next weekend, weather permitting.
