Standing up for peace

A group of local women hold a peace vigil at noon Monday at the intersection of Pioneer Avenue and Lake Street. A dozen women participated.

Part of the Nobel Peace Prize-nominated Women in Black movement, a worldwide network of women committed to peace with justice, the group's members will continue to hold weekly vigils, said member Debbie Poore.

Dedicated to the idea that "every bullet first pierces the heart of a mother," Women in Black events are always women only, standing in a public place in silent nonviolent vigils. Monday's gathering was in opposition to war in Iraq.
