Katherine Faulkner made the fall honor roll at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., for earning at least a 5-point average on a 6-point scale. She is the daughter of Jonathan and Sara Faulkner.

Coast Guard Seaman Michael A. Scalzo II recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J. The son of Janice and Michael Scalzo of Ninilchik, he is a 2001 graduate of Ninilchik High School and joined the Coast Guard in October 2002.

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs seeks local host families for foreign students from Europe, Asia and the South Pacific. It also seeks students wishing to be exchange students.

Announcements

The Homer Council on the Arts seeks a volunteer to help catalog books, CDs, videos and pamphlets in its new arts library. For more information, call Janet Bowen at 235-4288.

Gabriel Hanenberger, the infant son of Jason and Catherine Hanenberger, was medevaced to Providence Hospital, Anchorage on Dec. 11. He is in the pediatric intensive-care unit and will need heart surgery at a Portland, Ore., clinic. A fund has been set up at First National Bank to help his family, and donation jars are at local businesses. KBBI is now recruiting volunteers for the station. New equipment will be installed and training sessions for new and old volunteers will be offered in February or March. To volunteer, stop by the station to pick up an application. Call 235-7721.

The Homer Chamber of Commerce is soliciting events for the Homer Winter Carnival, Feb. 15-16.

Community School

The winter catalogue has been mailed. New classes not in the catalog include "Tarot Symbology for Personal Growth and Transformation" and "Increasing Self Understanding." Classes still with openings include "Women's Art and Discussion Group," "The Creative Challenge: Going Deeper," "Basket Making," "Introduction to Crystal Singing Bowl Therapy," "Family and Friends CPR," "Spanish for Beginners," "Intermediate/Advanced Spanish," "Boating Skills and Seamanship," "Chants and Rounds from Around the World" and "Web Page Design for Nonprofits." The M/V Kennicott visits Kodiak, Seward, Valdez, Yakutat, Juneau, Ketchikan and Prince Rupert, Can., before returning to Homer on Feb. 22. The Tustumena is in drydock for repairs and returns to Homer on April 15.
