Getting to the Root

By Serge Lecomte

Everything is in a name. The city of Salzburg literally means Salt City because of the salt mines around it. Salt (sel, sal, sol’ …) was used to barter for slaves. This gave rise to the expression that a person was “not worth his salt.” Romans soldiers were paid in salt. That is where we get the word SALary. A person receiving salt as a salary was a SOLdier.

Did you know the covenants in the Old and New Testaments were sealed with salt? And that is why we have the word SALvation? Ever look closely at Da Vinci’s Last Supper. In it you can see Judas Iscariot spilling a bowl of salt, which was a bad omen. In India if you give salt as a gift it is a symbol of good luck.

The waters around Seldovia once teemed with “seld’” (Russian for herring). That is why it is named Seldovia.

Dr. Serge Lecomte graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in linguistics. He taught Russian and Spanish at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has lived in the Homer area since 1999 and writes plays and novels for fun.
