All right, Betsteroids, like President Obama said, it's time to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get to work remaking America. We've got a big job ahead of us, but you know Americans. We'll get through our troubles the way we always do, one day at a time.
Here at Latitude 59 degrees and some change, "one day at a time" is how we get through the winter. "One day at a time" works pretty darn well because one day it could be absolutely foul and disgusting, cold enough to freeze sea brine, and the next day, like last Saturday or Sunday, sunny and warm.
A combination of sunshine, temperatures in the low 40s and an afternoon low tide made Bishop's Beach an even more popular place than usual last Saturday.
Even Tuesday felt pretty good, and you know Tuesdays. Tuesdays don't get any respect. On Tuesday afternoon the Betster took a stroll on the Spit. With ice floes on the beach, the sun shining, seals in the bay and temps in the low 30s, heck, it felt like summertime in Barrow. If you've ever been in Barrow, you know that if the sun's shining, it's a good day. Squint your eyes and ignore the spanky condos, and sometimes Homer feels like Barrow.
A warm winter day where the sun shines, whether here or in Washington, D.C., can inspire even the most cynical to feel joy and hope. No matter how bad things might seem, no matter how dark and cold our day might be, one day the sun will come out. That's the message of BHO, Our Man with the Plan, but it's been the message for millennia.
Like the Big O said, we're just as smart, just as talented, just as hard working on the day things went to heck as we were the day before. We'll be even smarter -- and a lot wiser from the experience -- when we pull through this.
Pick yourself up and dust yourself off. There are worlds to conquer and, of course, fun things to do, like these Best Bets:
BEST ON EAGLES' WINGS BET: Homer just won't be the same without the incredible Jean Keene around. Celebrate our own Eagle Lady's life with a ceremonial eagle feeding at 3 p.m. Saturday at her cabin on the Homer Spit. A reception follows at 3:30 p.m. at Land's End Resort.
BEST WELCOME BACK BET: Film lovers in town have a secret for getting through the winter: Foreign Film Fridays. Once again the popular series returns at Kachemak Bay Campus, thanks to the KBC Student Association. The series starts at 7 p.m. Friday with "The House of Sand," a Brazilian film directed by Andrucha Waddington in a mythic tale of a woman caught in a sand labyrinth in northern Brazil.
BEST ZIPPING ZAMBONI BET: Sure, the ice on Beluga Lake is a bit slushy, but over at the Kevin Bell Ice Arena, the rink is looking good and solid. The Zamboni drivers will be working overtime for the big hockey tournament when the Mariners take on, like, you know, some teams from the Valley. Today it's Homer vs. Palmer at 6 p.m. with a rematch at noon Saturday. At 6 p.m. Friday, it's Homer vs. Wasilla.
BEST ONE LAST RUN BET: If you missed the Telluride Mountainfilm festival Tuesday, the second part plays today at 7 p.m. at the Mariner Theatre, with high-adrenaline and thought-provoking adventure films. Admission is $12.
