Volcanoes

Even before hitting Baycrest Hill, drivers headed to Homer already will have experienced Cook Inlet’s volcanoes. While normally peaceful, these giants on the far side of the inlet can erupt into amazing displays.

The three volcanoes, Augustine, Iliamna and Redoubt, run south to north, or left to right on Baycrest Hill. A handy acronym, “AIR,” helps to remember their order. A fourth volcano, Mount Douglas, is farther south and visible only on clear days.

  • Augustine Volcano, an island in lower Cook Inlet, towers at 4,025 feet high. The Cook Inlet region experienced ash falls in the 1963-64, 1976 and 1986 eruptions of Augustine.
  • liamna Volcano, a stratovolcano in the Aleutian Range in Lake Clark National Park, stands 10,016 feet tall. Twin, 7,500-foot peaks form Iliamna’s southern shoulder and help distinguish the volcano from Redoubt.
  • Redoubt Volcano, another stratovolcano, stretches 10,197 feet into the sky. Redoubt erupted in 1966-68 and 1989-90.
  • Mount Douglas, a dissected stratovolcano southwest of Homer, stands about 7,000 feet high at the tip of Shelikof Strait.
