Getting to the Root

By Serge Lecomte

Global warming is caused by more than cars, factories, power plants and farms. Every time we turn on the tap, radio, TV or computer; bathe or flush the toilet, we use electricity. The obvious. Then there are sewage treatment plants, dumps, forests and fields, where decomposition of organic matter occurs.

Add to those factors seven billion people who have to breathe, pass gas, defecate and in the process exhale carbon dioxide and expel nitrogen. Our pets have to breathe, too. And let’s not forget the millions of mammals, fish and insects in the wilderness.

Then there are thousands of supermarkets where the corpses of cabbage, broccoli, etc. literally rot and release carbon dioxide until we eat them.

Every time we bake bread with yeast or baking powder, open a bottle of champagne, fizzy pop, can of coffee, we release more carbon dioxide.

Can you think of other ways we contribute to global warming?

Dr. Serge Lecomte graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in linguistics. He taught Russian and Spanish at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has lived in the Homer area since 1999 and writes plays and novels for fun.
