Film night, thanks to TRAILS

“My Flesh and Blood,” a film following one year in the lives of California mother Susan Tom and her 11 adopted children will be shown at 6 p.m. today at Land’s End. Ten of the children are physically or mentally disabled. The film is sponsored by Total Recreation and Independent Living Services, or TRAILS, of the Independent Living Center of Homer. Concert marks Mozart’s birthday

Bunnell Street Gallery celebrates Mozart’s birthday on Sunday with a concert by pianist Juliana Osinchuk at 2 p.m. The program features work from Mozart’s first minuet written at the age of 5 to his most mature work, and includes a tribute to Mozart by Frederic Chopin. Tickets are $25 general and $20 gallery members. Youth ages 8-18 get in free when accompanied by a ticketed adult. Refreshments follow the concert. For reservations, call 235-2662.

Take a class in glass

Morning Star Studio has announced classes for February and March, including single- and multiple-day courses with topics ranging from beginning stained glass to working with intermediate fusing, with many projects made along the way. Call Morning Star, 235-2008, for more information.

Winter recital series continues

Next in the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra Winter Recital Series is a performance by University of Alaska Anchorage woodwinds professor Mark Wolbers and five of his students. Wolbers was a guest soloist during the KPO Summer Music Festival and is the annual woodwinds clinician for the festival. The recital will be at the residence of Don and Sharon Cotogno, owners of Timber Bay B&B, at 3 p.m. Feb. 5. Auditions scheduled

Opera comes to Homer

“The Mixed Up Marriage” will be performed by the Anchorage Opera Studio Theater at Bunnell Street Gallery on Feb. 9, following a candlelight dinner catered by Panarelli’s at 7 p.m. This is a comedic operetta of mistaken identity, misadventures and unforgettable melodies written by Jacques Offenbach. Tickets are $50, which include the dinner, beverages, dessert and performance. This is a fund-raiser for Bunnell’s Artist in the Schools program. For reservations, call 235-2662.

Create a toy

As part of the Homer Winter Carnival, Homer Council on the Arts is presenting “Toy Vehicles on Parade.” Adults are invited to bring one toy vehicle and participate in a competitive “decorate your little float” contest, 2-4 p.m. Feb. 11. HCOA will provide supplies; contestants have one hour to create the float. Entries will be judged and prizes awarded. Entry fee is $10. For more informtaion, call 235-4288.

Have fish, will create

Artists are sought for the fourth annual Wild Salmon on Parade, a public exhibit in which fiberglass fish are decorated and displayed throughout downtown Anchorage. It is modeled after and inspired by Chicago’s Cows on Parade. Twenty salmon will be designed and displayed from June to August. Money raised goes to Camp Fire USA Alaska Council, the Anchorage Concert Association and the Alaska Conservation Foundation. All Alaska artists are welcome to submit proposals.

Poster designs needed

Alaska artists of all ages are invited to submit artwork in the Alaska Ag Day poster contest, sponsored by Alaska Agriculture in the Classroom, the Alaska Division of Agriculture’s Alaska Grown Program and Alaska Farm Bureau. Quilters piece it together

The Kenai Peninsula State Fair is having a square-off. Kits are $10 and must be completed by March 31. The theme is “A Fair to Remember.” All blocks will be judged. Blocks will be put together into a quilt and raffled. Kits may be picked up at Kenai Fabric or by calling the fair office at (907) 567-3670 for more information. All proceeds go to benefit the Kenai Peninsula State Fair.
