From the Mariner cross country ski team, Morgan Jones, Gus Beck, Erika Klaar and Claire and Teal Laukitis made the trip to Anchorage Saturday and Sunday, and they took another step toward a spot on the Junior National and Arctic Winter Games teams.
Jones finished sixth in the J1/OJ division Saturday in the 15-kilometer skate race and 13th Sunday at the 7.5 K classic.
Beck finished 40th and 46th in those races as well.
In the J1/OJ girls division, Klaar finished 15th in the 10 K skate and 26 in the 7.5 K classic.
In the 3 K skate race in the J2 division Saturday, Claire Laukitis placed 17th while Teal Laukitis finished 33rd. On Sunday, Claire finished 20th and Teal finished 23rd.
Other Homer skiers competing included Michael Mumm, who finished 11th and ninth in the Senior division; Jens Klaar, who finished fourth and third in the M4 division; and Ken Jones, who finished first on both days in the M7 division.
After four Besh Cup races, Morgan Jones is in eighth place in the men’s OJ/J1 division. Erika Klaar is 21st in the women’s OJ/J1 division. And in the girls J2 division, Claire Laukitis is 14th and Teal is 17th.
The next Besh Cup races are scheduled for Feb. 4-5 in Fairbanks. Skiers keep their best four races if all six are held. The top 15 OJ/J1 finishers earn a spot on the Junior Nationals team while the next four gain a spot on the Arctic Winter Games team. The top six J2s go to Junior Nationals and the next four go to the Arctic Winter Games.
