Food pantry reflects on year of giving

Point of view

Diana Jeska

Looking back over this past year, we at the Homer Community Food Pantry have experienced gains and losses as many of you have. Regretfully, we will miss Home Sweet Homer as they close, Floyd Gonzales, former pantry coordinator, and Mary Etta Haunschild, volunteer. The Pantry is only a place to go for help. Its real value is found in the hearts of people who care enough about their neighbors to reach out with a helping hand.

We wish to thank Safeway, Save-U-More, Subway, Espresso Express, the Duncan House, Bear Claw Bakery, Home Sweet Homer, ACS and the South Peninsula Hospital for their continued weekly support and provision this past year.

We appreciate all the private food and financial donations during this season, which are too numerous to list here, but a few are the Kachemak Bay Lions, who organized Dine Out for Hunger, American Legion Auxiliary No. 6, Rotary Club, the U.S. Coast Guard Hickory and Glacier View Baptist Church. A sizable contribution was made just before Christmas that happily put us in the black.

Our community's generosity forms the vital structure for the assistance of those experiencing hardship. We are proud to be part of a community that is compassionate toward others. Because of your gifts, many had a generous Thanksgiving and Christ-mas.

Did you know that it often takes a team of people to help those in need? For example, the week before Christmas, a family of seven lost their home. With the help of the Salvation Army, the food pantry and the generous owner of the Windjammer, the family was able to stay for 10 days until they could get other help. They spent Christmas here, received gifts for their five children, food for the holidays and gas.

We always need canned and dry goods; (i.e. canned tomatoes, rice, oats, eggs, noodles, Top Ramen, fruit, vegetables and peanut butter. We always need pint-size containers (we are desperate for yogurt containers), Ziplocs (sandwich and quart-sized) and 16-ounce bottles. Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. is the best time to bring items by the Methodist Church.

On behalf of the Food Pantry's board of directors and its volunteers we offer our sincere appreciation for your continued help and support throughout the year. It takes an entire community to care for one another when difficult circumstances arise. We are our brother's keeper. May you and yours have a blessed new year.
