Anchor Point resident Mr. Gerald Marvin Miller, 60, died Tuesday, Jan, 12, 2010, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer with his family by his side.

Per his request there will be no formal services held. His cremated remains will be scattered in the Westport Harbor in Washington at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010.

Mr. Miller was born Oct. 14, 1949, to James Alexander and Mary Jane Miller in the Swedish Hospital in Seattle. He moved to Alaska in 1990, living in Anchor Point. Gerald also had lived in Homer and Ninilchik before making Anchor Point his home. Gerald worked many jobs, including Northwest Coast rock concert promoter, bulldozer operator, QFC store manager, sports fishing and big game assistant guide, commercial fisherman, Canadian lodge bushwhacker, Bering Sea king crab and bottom fish captain, vessel transporter from Florida to Westport and from Washington to Alaska. He also crewed on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Research Vessel Tiglax. Gerald retired 20 years ago due to chemical exposure. He volunteered as a firefighter in Washington and Alaska. Gerald was awarded heroism for saving 18 lives at sea, as quoted in the Spike Walker Book "Nights of Ice" in the chapter "On the Rocks." He enjoyed gourmet cooking and recipes, golfing, art, big game hunting and sports fishing and clamming.

The family wrote, "Jerry never met a stranger. He was a gentleman, a loving husband and grandpa. Everything he did, he did to perfection. He was generous and had a big heart. He will be missed by everyone who ever met him."

He was preceded in death by his father, James Alexander Miller.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Jane Miller of Kenmore, Wash.; wife, Joan Crane Miller of Anchor Point; sister, Sandy Santy of Kenmore, Wash.; brothers, Craig Miller of Tumwater, Wash., and Ron Miller of Westport, Wash.; nephews, Jason Miller, Adam Miller, and Jeremy Santy; niece, Angela Greff; stepdaughters, Kimberly Werner of Spokane, Wash.; Rainbow Crane, Rose Middleton and Dora Barfield; and stepsons, Angus Crane and Chris Crane.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Gerald to any charity or organization helping the survivors of the Haitian earthquake.

Arrangements were made by The Homer Funeral Home.
