rue confessions of a left-wing conspirator
M.J. Haines
point of view

OK! I admit it. I'm the "Left-Wing Conspirator" whom previous readers have written letters about. And, maybe, I'm a one-person "Left-Wing Conspiracy," since I can't find anyone else to conspire with.

What makes me the "Left-Wing Conspirator?" Well, based on readers' definitions, I offer the following:

At the last presidential election, I did not vote for George "Dubya" Bush. Neither did I vote Democrat. I voted "Green."

I don't support George "Dubya's" apparent objective to rule the world with the aid of U.S. military force. We have to find a way to live in a world with 5 billion others of diverse nationalities, points-of-view and ideals.

I do support the elimination of terrorism. But then, if we knew how to live in a diverse world, we would not have terrorists. I don't support our president's reasoning for an invasion of Iraq. Just because Saddam tried to assassinate his father does not give him the right to drag us all down the road to an uncertain future. Let's do it the old-fashioned way: a duel with Scud missiles between George and Saddam.

I don't support tax cuts. But then again, I don't support tax increases. To maintain a certain level of services, we have to accept taxation. I think all readers would like our current level of services to be maintained or improved.

I support the environment, an environment that is not any one individual's right (including mine) to destroy or harm.

I don't support the diversion of tax dollars from social services to the military. On a per-capita basis, we spend more dollars on the military than any other nation. We currently have sufficient weapons to subdue any other nation. Why do we need to spend more?

I disagree with our loss of personal privacy being taken away by the "wonderful" U.S. Justice Department in the name of homeland security.

But then again, I support a secure nation where everyone has the ability to work and play without fear. But that's called "defense of the nation," not "ruling the world."

And, lastly, I believe that everyone has the right and the obligation to express their points of view. That's called "freedom of the press," and that's what the Homer News does so well by allowing "left-wing conspirators" like me write left-wing propaganda like this.

Does my point of view make me a "Left-Wing Conspirator"? Probably, by some reader's definition. So, if anyone shares my points of view, let me know. We'll have a few beers (Homer Brewery, of course) and form a "conspiracy."

M.J. Haines lives in Baltimore and frequently visits Homer, where his daughter lives, and where he will retire to next year.
