Dog days of winter

Rachel Scdoris of Bend, Ore., was one of 16 racers to finish the Tustumena 200 Sled Dog Race over the weekend. This is the second year Scdoris, who is legally blind, has entered the Tustumena 200, a qualifying event for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Tim Osmar, a musher from Ninilchik, served as Scdoris’s visual interpreter. She also will race in this year’s Iditarod in March with Osmar as her interpreter. The 2005 Tustumena 200 champ, Jessica Hendricks of Two Rivers, won this year’s race, with Dean Osmar of Clam Gulch in second place and Jeff King of Denali in third.
