Homer's Best Bets

Eagles or Patriots?

That seems to be the question this weekend as a nation sits down to watch the most overblown spectacle contrived by man — Super Bowl XXXIX.

The game will be broadcast in more than 180 countries, a 30-second ad will cost more than $3 million, and more Americans will wager legally and illegally Sunday than on any other day of the year (fitting the Betster would know that, eh?)

For football widows and hockey fans, however, Sunday marks the end of the devilish grip the National Football League has on sports fanatics.

Come Monday, football husbands and an increasing number of football wives will return to the chores that they have put off all winter.

But for those of you who don't know (or care) about the difference between an I-formation and the wishbone offense, here are a few Bets that'll keep you grinning — and there will be no point spread or mean-tempered bookies to deal with.

Best Great Day For A Parade Bet: The 2005 Winter Carnival Parade hits the Homer pavement Saturday with floats, fire trucks and the Betster's favorite hard candy thrown from the floats and fire trucks. Awards will be given, dignitaries will ride around in cars and all your friends will worry if you aren't there. The parade starts at noon Saturday and runs down Pioneer Drive. Other carnival events include a home-brew contest, Mardi Gras King Ball and the Second Annual Miss Homer Contest — featuring men of all things. See page 6 for the complete schedule.

Best Beat the Cold with a Film Bet: The Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center is showing a series of five nature films from 11-4 p.m. on Saturday, including a film on eagle habitat and two documenting the history of the Aleutian Islands before and after World War II.

Best Ski for Women Bet: The Kachemak Nordic Ski Club will host the second annual Ski For Women Sunday at the McNeil Canyon ski trails to benefit South Peninsula Women's Services. Cost is $10 in advance, $15 at the event.

Best Musical Friends from Sitka Bet: The Sitka Music Festival presents a concert of chamber works for strings and piano at the Mariner Theatre Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m.

Best Spicy Steps Bet: Want to go to the RayJen Cajun Winter Carnival dance party? Don't know how to groove Cajun-style? Jules and Willy Dunne are willing to help. They are holding a class at the Homer High School Green Room Friday at 7:30 p.m. All levels welcome.

Best Music for Two Violins Bet: Heidi Senungetuk and Thom McLean fiddle for funds Sunday at Quinten and Marlene Arndt's residence. Visit Etude Studio for tickets and directions. Cost is $25.
