Schools need more money

I am writing to express my concerns about the inadequate state funding for Alaska schools and the effect it is having on our local district and ultimately all of our children.

Districts across Alaska are continually faced with mandates that are under-funded. Our district is no exception. Without an increase in funding from the state, the quality of education for our children will be jeopardized.

We need to take action now in order to convince the governor and legislators that enough is enough. Schools need adequate funding to keep up with the cost of doing business. In Alaska, the permanent fund is inflation-proofed and yet funding for schools is not. The Legislature needs to understand that our children deserve better.

Tonight from 6 to 7 p.m., the Kenai Peninsula legislators will hold their first monthly constituent meeting of the current session. Anyone can call in from either the Legislative Information Office in his or her community, or from their homes, to give their opinions to our legislators. Please find time to let Sen. Tom Wagoner, Rep. Mike Chenault, Rep. Kurt Olson, Rep. Paul Seaton and Sen. Gary Stevens know how you feel about funding for schools. The toll-free number is 1-800-395-5073.
