The Homer Middle School cross country ski team placed 16 skiers in the top 10 of the boys and girls seventh- and eighth-grade ski meet in Soldotna Saturday.
Eighth-graders Emma Laukitis and Kelsey Waldorf finished first and second in the girls 4K race, Frances Burch finished second in the girls seventh-grade race, Michael Pate finished third in the boys seventh-grade race and William Anderson finished fifth in the eighth-grade boys race.
Twenty-one Homer Middle School skiers participated.
The Homer Hockey Association Mites (ages 8 and under) won four games and tied one over the weekend to grab the hockey championship against the Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association 1 and 2 teams at the Peninsula Winter Games.
On Friday, the Homer team beat KPHA 1, 5-4, and KPHA 2, 4-3. On Saturday, Homer beat KPHA 2, 6-4, and tied KPHA 1, 5-5. Sunday Homer took the championship by beating KPHA 1, 3-1.
The 9- and 10-year-old Squirts division won four games in Anchorage with scores of 8-2, 4-1, 10-0 and 6-1. The Squirts now are 7-1-1 for the season.
The 11- and 12-year-old PeeWee division and the 13- and 14-year-old Bantam division also swept the competition at the Winter Games.
The PeeWees beat KPHA 1, 2-1, in the championship game. They tied their first game of the tournament and won the next five.
The Bantams beat Nikiski 9-4 in the championship game with hat tricks by David Buckley and William Faulkner. Mathew Marteshev also scored his first goal of the season in a 5-2 win over Big Lake on Saturday.
All four teams will compete in Anchorage this weekend at the President's Day Tournament.
