Homer resident Mrs. Avis Jill Gregory Bryant, 54, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at her home in Homer with her husband by her side after a battle with breast cancer.

Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at the American Legion Post No. 16 in Homer on East End Road.

Mrs. Bryant was born Dec. 27, 1954, in Chicago. After she was born she relocated with her family to Lake Dallas, Texas. She graduated from Lake Dallas High School in 1972. In 1974 Avis joined the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Avionics Training School. She spent the rest of her active duty during Vietnam at Alameda Naval Air Station in California. After serving four years she was honorably discharged.

Avis met her husband in 1980 and got married in Fiddletown, Calif., on May 23, 1981. For the next three years they worked at the Kirkwood Meadows Ski Resort and enjoyed the Sierra Nevada Mountains. She moved to Barrow to be an administrator for the North Slope Borough Health Department. She planned on staying only two years, but ended up staying almost 12. In 1995 she moved from Barrow to Homer where she thoroughly enjoyed her life with her husband. While in Homer, Avis worked for the NAPA store in the accounting department. She also managed a local liquor store. Her last and most rewarding job she had was working for the Salvation Army Thrift Store. She was heartbroken when she had to leave due to health problems.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Alexandria.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Dan Bryant of Homer; parents, Robert and Hazel Gregory of Sanger, Texas; sister, Andrea Frazier and her husband, Gerald of Sanger; stepson, Eli Bryant of Anchor Point; stepdaughter, Sunnie Bryant of Montana; granddaughters, Dale Bryant and Clair Bryant, both of Anchor Point; sister in-law, Katie Bryant of Ione, Calif.; daughter in-law, Lisa Bryant of Anchor Point; and niece, Raegan Des Jardins of Argyle, Texas.
