North Fork trailhead opened

The Anchor Point Nordic Ski Club held the grand opening of the new North Fork trailhead located at 5.5 Miles North Fork Road Saturday.

Area residents have been skiing and snowmachining on the state land adjacent to the trailhead for roughly the last 15 years.

The trailhead land is owned by Community Rivers Planning Coalition. It was donated to CRPC by Spenard Builders Supply in order to further the goal of establishing a multi-use trailhead for the community. It is open to the public.

Middle school skiers shine

The Homer Middle School Ski team traveled to Seward last weekend to compete in the 1K sprint races. Teal and Claire Laukitis took first and second place for the girls. Tyler Haas won the first consolation heat for the boys. The following is a list of Homer finishers.

Girls

Championship heat:

Laukitis, Teal, 5:18; 2. Laukitis, Claire, 5:28; 3. Arndt, Jaclyn, 5:37.

Consolation heat:

Temple, Jill, 5:39; 2. Harrison, Grace, 6:30.

Boys

Consolation heat 1:

Haas, Tyler, 5:17; 5. Schneider, Patrick, 5:43.

Consolation heat 2:

Jasper, William, 6:12; 6. Rehner, Wyatt, 7:13.

HHS Hockey split weekend

The High School Hockey team fell to SoHi 7-3 on Friday, but bounced back Saturday to beat Skyview 3-2.

Sohi scored three quick goals in the first and added one in the second before Homer's offense got on track.

Justin Adams, Matt Satre and Travis Brown scored goals in the third, but SoHi added three of their own to ice the game.

SoHi outskated the Mariners and outshot them 29-21.

On Saturday, Nate Miller, Adams and Satre scored goals as the Mariners avenged a 5-3 loss two weeks ago. Scott Owens added two assists.

The team travels to the Nikiski ice rink for games Friday night at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at noon. The State tournament begins the following weekend.

Spinach optional

Practices for the Popeye Wrestling Club begin Feb. 23 in the Homer High wrestling room. Ages 5-7, Sat. 2-3 p.m. Ages 6-12, Mon, Wed, Fri, 3:45-5 p.m. Ages 13-18, Tuesday, Thursday 3:45-5 p.m.

Beginners welcome. Sign up at Community Schools or at first practice. A parents meeting will be held Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at the High School Room B106.

Mariner skiers earn 6th

The team of Erika Klaar, Travis Hines, Kristen Vantrease and Morgan Jones skied to sixth place at the Nikiski relays Saturday.

The Homer B team consisting of Samantha Halpin, Peter Shepard, Monika Peters and Tad Martin finished 9th.

The Homer Cross Country Team is sponsoring the Homer Invitational Saturday at 1 p.m. at the McNeil Canyon Ski Trails. All peninsula ski teams are scheduled to participate.

Wine and Cheese on tap

The Kachemak Nordic Ski Club will be holding its annual Wine and Cheese Tour Saturday, Feb. 14. The tour begins at noon from Mile 2, Diamond Ridge Road near the old White Alice site. All skiers are invited. There will be two stops at private residences. The trail will be groomed for skating and tracks will be set with round trip distance being approximately 7-8 k. A donation of $10 for club member and $15 for non-members is requested. Children 10 and under are free. A variety of wines, cheeses, crackers and juices will be served. Wolverine cagers pounce

The Ninilchik boys beat Yakutat 57-46 while the Ninilchik girls won 52-27 last weekend at home. Connor Cooper scored a team high 20 points for the boys team as they held off a late rally and 10-point fourth-quarter performance from Yakutat's Kyle Dierick for the victory.

Amanda Peterson led all girls with 16 points as the Lady Wolverines outscored Yakutat in every quarter for the lop-sided win.

Warriors, CIA take rumble

The Nikolaevsk boys and Cook Inlet Academy girls grabbed first place honors at the Warrior Rumble basketball tournament at the Nikolaevsk School "Warrior Dome" last weekend.

Nikolaevsk's Peter Tipikin scored 24 points in the boys championship game to lead his squad past Homer Christian 42-39.

Alyse Bell of CIA scored 13 in their come-from-behind victory against Yakutat in the girls championship game.
