Chris Gedicks of Matanuska Christian blocks a shot attempt by Nikolaevsk forward Sam Kuzmin during Saturday's Nikolaevsk Tournament boys final. Nikolaevsk cruised to victory in the game, taking the tourney title with a 63-50 win over the Eagles.
The Nikolaevsk boys brought home the hardware on the heels of a 63-50 win over Matanuska Christian on Saturday, but they didn't have very far to go, since the trophy was from the Warriors' own four-team, two-day tournament.

The Warrior girls took second in the girls tourney after a 54-31 loss to Matanuska Christian in the final.

Peter Tipikin led a very balanced Nikolaevsk boys offense, scoring 17 points. Stepan Nikitenko and Terry Usoltseff each added 16 for the Warriors.

The Eagles, led by Chris Gedicks' game-high 30 points, kept it close, pulling to within two points at 46-44 as third quarter ended.

But the quickness of Nikolaevsk proved to be too much in the final eight minutes. Down the stretch, the Warriors went 5 of 6 from the line.

Nikitenko, a sophomore guard who a year ago was almost strictly an outside threat, showed the Eagles that he could slash through the lane and finish inside as well.

"My driving is much better this year," he said, adding that the attention he gets from defenders allows him to dish out more assists as well.

Nikitenko's improvement -- he has averaged more than 20 points a game this season -- gives the Warriors two aggressive and quick playmakers, who are unafraid to bring the ball into the paint.

Tipikin, the other threat, said the inside game has picked up all around for the Warriors, who put some height in their low post attack with the addition of 6-foot-3 Jake Bailey and 6-4 Anecta Kalugin.

"Our post has improved so much," Tipikin said. "Last year it was all outside."

Bailey showed the potential of Nikolaevsk's new dimension on Friday, when he poured in a game-high 23 points to lead the Warriors to a 67-37 demolition of Anderson.

Nikolaevsk coach Steve Klaich said he was particularly pleased with the play of Usoltseff, whose 16 points on Saturday marked a breakout performance.

"That's the best I've seen him play," Klaich said.

Klaich said the Warriors, who opened the season with a 4-1 run at the Yakutat tournament only to see injuries and the flu run them down, have started to play the kind of basketball he hoped to see. With a pair of wins at their tourney, Nikolaevsk improved to 8-4 overall.

The Homer Christian School boys pulled out a 40-39 win over Anderson in the third-place game Saturday afternoon.

Javin Halpin, who led the Knights with 15 points, hit the game-winning free throw and had four treys in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. Shawn Seymour scored 12, while Micaiah Ellert, Peter Resetarits and Jamie Arndt each scored four for the Knights.

On Friday, HCS fell to Matanuska Christian 42-36. Resetarits led the Knights with a game-high 11 points, and Ellert added nine.

Both teams struggled to find their offense early as the Eagles edged to a 16-15 lead at the half.

MCS girls win

In the girls tournament, the Eagles rode an 18-point performance from Jubilee Brost to their tournament win.

The Warriors were led by Nikki Melkomukov and Lakenida Yakunin, who each scored 11.

For one eight-minute stretch, the Warriors showed some inspired defensive pressure. The Nikolaevsk girls held the Eagles to just two points in the second period.

The Warrior girls are all smiles as they celebrate a second-place finish and winning the sportsmanship award in the Nikolaevsk Basketbl Tournament held Friday and Saturday. They are, from left, Larisa Martushev, Lekonida Yakunin, Anya Yakunin, Nikki Melkomukov (with trophies), Sonia Reutov, Kazdoya Martushev and Olivia Tipikin.
"There's always one good quarter," Melkomukov said. "Then we get ourselves in a hole, and then we've got to try to catch up."

Still, those intermittent runs of success are a positive sign for Nikolaevsk coach Brent Keene, who said his team, made up entirely of freshmen and sophomores, continues to show improvement.

"We're still real young, but each game we get a little bit better," Keene said.

Sophomore co-captain Sonia Reutov agreed.

"I think in every game we're in we improve," she said. "If not in (how we run) our plays, then in our passing or our defense."

On Friday, the Warriors beat Anderson 45-28 as Melkomukov dumped 16 to lead all scorers. Sonia Reutov added 15 and Yakunin had eight in the Warriors' win.

In the girls third-place game, Homer Christian School stomped Anderson 45-12 behind 12 points from Shelby Seymour.

Eight different Knights found their way into the scoring column. Shanda Cundiff netted nine for the Knights, Larissa Cullenberg scored six and Jana Porter, Anna Keim, Cristy Case and Courtney Walker each netted four.

"It's always a team effort," HCS coach Nita Ward said of her squad.

Because the score was so lopsided -- Anderson only had five players dressed to play -- Ward said she was able to get her bench some solid minutes.

"It was like a really good practice."

Courtney Walker said it was eye-opening to play for an extended period with some of her teammates who don't get a lot of playing time.

"I learned what the players on the bench can contribute," she said.

Confidence-building games are a big boost for a Knights team that a year ago played a few games where they were the team dressing the minimum or the minimum plus one.

On Friday, Matanuska Christian handed the Knights a 29-18 loss in a tough defensive struggle.

"We did really well on defense," said Cristy Case. "But our shots just weren't falling on offense. We were just off."

Cundiff led the way with 12 points for the Knights, who are now 4-8 overall.
