Homer Middle School holds a multi-family garage sale and bake sale at the school from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 15 to help raise funds for the eighth-grade's Washington, D.C. field trip.
The National Wildlife Federation holds a "Civics and Conservation Summit" for high school students March 25-28 in Juneau. Participants explore environmental topics while learning civic skills. The Homer High School ski team holds a cash raffle with a $5,000 grand prize. Only 400 tickets are being sold at $50 each and are available at Homer Saw & Cycle, the offices of Dr. Todd or Dr. Heston, Anchor Point Tesoro or from any ski team member. Call 235-6090. Tickets will be drawn at a spaghetti dinner 6-7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the high school.
Alaska Equine Rescue helps horses throughout Alaska, including the Kenai Peninsula, through education, assistance and intervention. Student and Military News
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Gene L. Martin has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Gene Martin of Anchor Point.
Air Force Airman Anna J. Klapak has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is a 2002 graduate of Ninilchik High School and is the daughter of Joe Klapak, Ninilchik, and the granddaughter of Nancy Peterson, Woodbury, Minn.
U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens has nominated Ivan D. Bucher, son of Wes and Virginia Bucher, Homer, to the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, and Victoria A. Florey, daughter of Stuart and Anne Florey, Ninilchik, to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.
Nicholas G. Szymoniak made the fall dean's list at the University of Idaho, Moscow, for earning at least a 3.3 grade-point average. He is the son of Chris and Glen Szymoniak and is a freshman majoring in engineering and letters and science.
Michelle Allison and Evangelia Sloth made the fall dean's list at Seattle Pacific University for earning at least a 3.5 GPA.
Carson Ingles made the fall dean's list at Kettering University, Flint, Mich., for earning at least a 92 GPA.
Jayme Ragland, a freshman majoring in nursing, made the fall dean's list at Harding University, Searcy, Ark., for earning at least a 3.65 grade-point average. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ragland of Anchor Point and a Homer High School graduate.
Joy Epley and Jami Epley, both of Anchor Point, and Andrew Peters of Homer made the fall dean's list at Northwest Nazarene University, Nampa, Idaho, for earning at least a 3.5 GPA.
The Kenai Peninsula School District is starting a preschool project at Paul Banks Elementary offering a limited number of preschool vacancies. Children must meet program requirements and are selected by lottery. To apply, visit Paul Banks Elementary School during school hours or call (907) 262-4478. Apply by Feb. 17.
The Kenai Peninsula School District reminds parents of middle and high school students that tetanus-diphtheria booster vaccinations might be due for children about age 14. DTP shots are good for 10 years, and the vaccines are required for attending school.
The district asks parents to check immunization records or consult with the school nurse.

The M/V Kennicott visits Kodiak, Seward, Valdez, Yakutat, Juneau, Ketchikan and Prince Rupert, Can., before returning to Homer on Feb. 22. The Tustumena is in drydock for repairs and returns to Homer on April 15.
