Love, kindness never wasted

Looking back over 2005, the Homer Food Pantry has been blessed in every way. Our two fund-raisers, the Golf Tournament and Quilt Raffle, were very profitable. In 2005, the Food Pantry served 6,961 boxes of food to those in need. This is an average of 580 per month.

We have two food delivery programs that provide food to shut-ins and disabled in our service area from Port Graham to Ninilchik. We also deliver the Kenai Food Bank’s Commodity Supplemental Food Program that is a USDA program supplying a monthly food box to 67 qualifying clients. One of our largest demographics represented in our families and individuals requesting food services are the disabled. According to the U.S. Census Bureau estimates, 86,000 Alaskans or 15 percent of Alaska’s population in 2003 have a disability.

Some people have asked if we receive monies from the Kenai Food Bank when they send a contribution form to those of us in Homer. No, we do not receive the money directly. However, indirectly we can get what food items they have for a reasonable fee. In 2005 our agency purchased 11,000 pounds of food items from the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank.

We are most grateful for the community’s response to those in need. Help always seems to come when most needed. Without those who faithfully support us each month with food and finances, we would be hard pressed to provide the services we do. Thank you, Homer.

We owe a great deal to Safeway, Save-U-More, Subway, Espresso Express and South Peninsula Hospital for their daily food items. Also, Catholic Women’s Guild, Homer United Methodist Church and St. Augustine Episcopal Church help us financially each month.

We also are thankful for our dedicated volunteers. Without their help the pantry could not provide the food products to feed those who seek our services. The board members are among the most faithful and are involved every Monday. A few have been here since its beginning.

Remember we always need canned and dry goods (e.g., canned tomatoes, rice, oats, eggs, noodles, Top Ramen, beans, canned fruit and vegetables). We also need half-pint and 16-ounce size containers (much needed are yogurt size containers), and Ziplocs (sandwich and quart).

Those of us at the food pantry thank you for your support and help for those in need. Love and kindness are never wasted. Neighbors helping neighbors always make a difference.
