The temperature hovered around 0 degrees for most of the day, but the Mariner girls still managed a second-place finish at the meet.

Soldotna grabbed first-place honors with a team time of 1 hour, 47 minutes, 26 seconds, while Homer finished with a time of 1 hour, 47 minutes, 54 seconds.

Rykaczewski finished sixth at 26:35.3. She was followed by Claire Laukitis in seventh, just six-tenths of a second behind, and Sara Arsenault in ninth at 27 minutes.

Kristin Vantrease finished 12th at 27:42, Thorey Munro finished 14th at 28:12 and Gillian Beran-Maryott finished 17th at 28:43.

On the boys side Mike Farrens grabbed a sixth place individually and the team finished in fifth place out of five teams.

Gus Beck finished in 11th place with a time of 21:55. Travis Hines finished15th in 22:30. Tyler Haas finished in 23rd in 23:52 and Dylan Carter, 30th with a time of 27:12.

Head Ski Coach Daryl Farrens said the boys race was tight.

"(There was) only three minutes between the second and fifth place team's times," he said.

Monica Peters won the girls JV race in a time of 31:16. She was followed by Kasey Aderhold in third at 31:40, Tia Halpin, fourth in 32:29, Julie Seneff, sixth in 34:38, Julia Beck, ninth in 39:43 and Benay Breyfogle, 11th in 45:58.

The Mariners also had two participants in the Besh Cup Races in Salcha and Fairbanks, Saturday and Sunday.

Erika Klaar finished 19th in the J2 girls race on Saturday and in fourth place on Sunday.

Morgan Jones finished in 12th on Sunday.

Both racers failed to qualify for the Junior National Team, but Mariner alumni, Aleta Phelps, who now races for University of Alaska Anchorage finished in fourth place in the JO division to make the team.
