Eva Renate Asbury  
Homer resident Eva Renate Asbury, 76, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Long Term Care in the South Peninsula General Hospital in Homer, Alaska. In May of 2004 the family will gather to scatter Eva's ashes in Kachemak Bay. The date of the gathering and services will be determined at a later date.

Eva was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Bremen, Germany. She had worked as a civil servant for the Veterans Administration Hospitals in various cities including Anchorage, San Antonio, Texas, and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., before retiring in 1992. Eva had also lived in Severn Park, Md., Springfield, Va, Santa Barbara, Calif., San Diego, Calif., and Washington, D.C. Eva moved to Anchorage in 1977 and moved to Homer in 1992. She was a member of the American Legion Post 16 Ladies Auxiliary in Homer, and served on the Board of Directors at the Homer Senior Citizens, Inc.

Eva had many years of volunteer work in Alaska. In Anchorage she was involved for 15 years with the local PBS station as a part of its membership fund-raising drives. In Homer, she participated with the Meals on Wheels. Her other volunteer efforts included knitting afghans and making robes for the residents of the Homer Senior Citizens center. Eva's many hours of volunteer work earned her a Volunteer of the Year award.

Eva was skilled in various crafts such as needlework, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She was an accomplished bowler and enjoyed bowling often, winning many awards in her lifetime. She was active in the Homer Bowling League and the Anchorage Bowling League. Eva participated in the 1998 and 2002 Women's International Bowling Congress Senior Championships.

Eva was preceded in death by her husband George F. Asbury, Sr.; mother, Dorothee Ernestine Wilhelmine Frida Moller Luetker; father, Buhnenarbeiter George Luetker; cousin, Hansjuergen von Riegen. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Gerald "Gary" A. and Veronica R. Drew of Lockhart, Texas; cousin Sigrid von Riegen of Germany; nephews Claus, Peter and Deter von Riegen, all of Germany; several great nieces of Germany; step-sons, Russ Asbury and his wife Toni and Rodger Asbury and his wife Barbro, all of Washington.
