Ninilchik girls cruise to title

The Ninilchik girls basketball team clinched first place at their own round-robin tournament by defeating Noorvik 65-20 on Saturday at Ninilchik. The Wolverines finished the tournament 3-0.

Krista Leman led all scorers with 22 points, including hitting all 14 of her foul shots. Lindsey Rohr added 11 points.

The Noorvik boys also finished the tournament 3-0 to take the championship. On Saturday, Noorvik defeated Ninilchik 69-48. Alan Conwell had 19 points for Noorvik, while Cliff Jackson had 14 points and Les Sampson had 13 points. For Ninilchik, Brandon Nobles had 21 points.

On Friday, the Ninilchik girls defeated Soldotna 63-19 behind 12 points from Jen Erickson and 10 points from Krista Leman. The Soldotna junior varsity defeated Ninilchik 54-44. Danny Roderick led Ninilchik with 22 points.

ConocoPhillips Warrior Rumble<P> The Nikolaevsk boys won the Rumble on Saturday by defeating Meade River 57-27 in the championship game at Nikolaevsk. Mavrik Kuzmin paced the Warriors with 13 points, while Daniel Nestor added 10 points.

In the girls championship game, Meade River defeated Nikolaevsk 49-39. Efrosia Yakunin scored 11 points in the loss.

In Friday’s girls semifinals, Nikolaevsk defeated Valley Christian 59-20 and Meade River topped Kenai’s junior varsity 45-36. Efrosia Yakunin had 21 points for Nikolaevsk, while Alex Gordeev added 11 points.

In Friday’s boys semifinals, Meade River defeated Anderson 45-31 and Nikolaevsk topped Valley Christian 67-63 in overtime. Markell Melkomukov paced Nikolaevsk with 24 points, while Mavrick Kuzmin had 17 points and Daniel Nestor added 14 points.

Third place at the tournament went to the Valley Christian boys and Kenai Central junior varsity girls. The sportmanship award went to the Whittier and the Valley Christian girls. The free throw contests were won by Mavrick Kuzmin of Nikolaevsk and Lexi Beeson of Kenai, while Kuzmin and Nikolaevsk’s Alexandra Gordeev won the 3-point contest.
