Cupids overtake Anchor Point

Jennifer Henley

Did you remember to send out those valentines? There were many little cupids running around the beginning of this week. Searching for the meaning of valentine in the dictionary I found it describes: sentimental or humorous greeting card sent to a sweetheart, friend or family member. I am sure glad they listed the humor part. That does give us the OK to let out some of that humor, which is important.

Did you know the oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt? The greeting, written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London. So now that Valentine’s Day is over, we need to remember Sno Rondi, which is Feb. 23-26. Come and join us in Anchor Point for some great festivities. For the activity schedule, please call the Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce at 235-2600.

Anchor Point Senior Citizen Center

Tonight’s dinner will be spaghetti and meatballs or beef stroganoff. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. The charge is $5 for members and $7 for nonmembers. The Feb. 23 dinner will be raspberry chicken breast, salmon cakes, rice pilaf and all the other fixings. There will be a Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, training following dinner. CERT training equips individuals to care for themselves and work as a team to care for their neighborhood, school or surrounding community until help arrives. The training is for anyone who wants to be ready to help in time of a disaster. It teaches us to pull together and gives the confidence we need when those few seconds count.

Anchor Point Chamber

Sno Rondi is rapidly approaching. Anyone who would like to play Snowshoe Softball is asked to contact Duane Harvey at 235-8244. Anyone interested in helping with Sno Rondi events is asked to contact the chamber 235-2600. There will be an auction Feb. 23 at the Anchor River Inn at 7 p.m. The pool tournament will be Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. Bingo also will be on Feb. 24 starting at 7 p.m.

The next chamber luncheon will be at noon Wednesday Anchor River Inn, and will feature the chairmen for all committees for Sno Rondi.

Anchor Point Library

The Anchor Point Library has been selected as one of two Alaska base sites for Augustine Volcano lighting research project. This research is being conducted by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

VFW Post 10221

There will be a barbecue Feb. 25. The monthly fish fry will be Feb. 26. Any Ladies Auxiliary members interested in helping with the float or Sno Rondi should call me at 235-2556. We still are in need of a trailer; it needs to be at least a four-place snowmachine trailer. If you know anyone who would like to donate their trailer, please call 235-2556. Tuesday is dart night starting at 8 p.m. and Friday is pool night starting at 8 p.m.

Community News

The Marine Corps League’s Fifth Annual Groundhog Day Fund-raiser was a big success thanks to the generous people of Anchor Point, Homer, Kenai and Soldotna. A great time was had by all who attended the Chinese auction and silent auction. A great big thank you goes to VFW Post 10221 for all its assistance and to Bill Wade for his excellent auctioneering.

Many local businesses and individuals gave generously and we would like to acknowledge their generosity here: Anchor Point Tesoro, The Warehouse, Blue Bus, Trading Post, Anchor River Inn, Anchor Point Hardware, Starvin Marvin’s, Ladies Auxiliary Post 10221, Patty Eddy, Margie Youngman, Wes Newcomb and R.J. Austin.

We appreciate the support and because of it our Young Marines Program and other Marine Corps League programs will continue to flourish.

If you have an item for Happenings in Anchor Point, please e-mail fish@xyz.net or call 235-2556.
